African nations gather to support a ban on cluster bombs

Thursday, April 3, 2008

A 39-nation coalition in Africa passed a declaration on Tuesday to ban cluster bombs in a nearly unanimous vote. The gathering in Lukasa, Zambia was the first meeting of the Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC) in Africa.

“Africa is ready for Dublin,” summarised Zambian delegate Robert Mtonga, referring to the upcoming May 19-30 meeting in Ireland to discuss a global ban on the weapons. “Too often Africa’s voice is pushed to the margins in international decision-making. But in banning cluster bombs worldwide, a common African voice will speak volumes and win the day”.

Too often Africa’s voice is pushed to the margins in international decision-making. But in banning cluster bombs worldwide, a common African voice will speak volumes and win the day.

Mtonga was critical of South Africa, the lone voice against Monday’s decision and the continent’s largest producer and stockpiler of cluster bombs, and called on the country to destroy its munitions and join the coalition to outlaw their use. Egypt, the only other African nation to produce the controversial weapons, voiced support for the ban.

“Strong political will” was credited with the resolution, by CMC co-ordinator Thomas Nash in recognising the drive “to stop the proliferation of this outdated weapon”.

In a released statement the CMC said that 19 African countries, including South Africa, have endorsed the Wellington Declaration. The Wellington Declaration is the basis for the upcoming negotiations at the Dublin Diplomatic Conference in Ireland in May.

While countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom have tabled the idea of a “transition period” during which time cluster bombs would remain a legitimate weapon of war, the African delegation was resolutely against the idea, calling for an immediate ban.

Cluster munitions are dropped from aircraft, opening in mid-air and releasing a large number of smaller explosives over a wide area. Writer Theodora Williams stated that their use usually results in “…the death and maiming of thousands of innocent civilians”.

There are currently 13 African nations that possess cluster bombs although Uganda has recently announced they are destroying their stockpiles. The weapons have been used in eight African conflicts in the past 35 years. In addition to Ethiopia, Morocco, Nigeria and the Sudan, other nations known to have used the weapons are the former Yugoslavia, Eritrea, France, Israel, the Netherlands, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tajikistan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the United States, China, Russia, and Israel have resisted any ban on cluster bombs, arguing that they can be used in self-defense. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the United States has lobbied allies to create loopholes in the upcoming Oslo treaty, to allow for the use of cluster bombs. Reuters reported that a U.S. official had stated that cluster bombs should not be banned if they are used responsibly in state conflicts.

In October 2007, Uganda became the first African country to state it would destroy its cluster bomb stockpiles. Uganda has announced a pan-African meeting to take place after the Dublin meeting, which would seek to garner support for the signing of a treaty in Oslo set to take place in December 2008. The weapons have been used in eight African conflicts in the past 35 years.

The CMC is an international network composed of over 250 civil society organizations in 60 countries, with the stated aim of protecting civilians from cluster munitions. Members of the CMC have been working to complete an international treaty to ban cluster munitions by 2008.

At the February CMC committee meeting in New Zealand, only 82 of the 122 nations present endorsed a draft ban on the production, usage or storage of cluster bombs.

The Basics Of Automated Meter Reading

byadmin

Most municipal water companies in the United States have converted all analog types of water meters to fully automated smart meters. This is true for both urban areas as well as rural areas.

By automating the monthly or alternate monthly meter reading process, municipalities were able to save cost in labor, fuel, and vehicles. Additionally, with accurate readings each month rather than estimates on alternate months and the risk of human error in the reading process, they recovered the cost of the installation of smart meters.

Today, property owners and property managers can take advantage of the same technology. Smart meters installed as submeters on individual units in residential or commercial properties allow for automated meter reading by utility billing companies. As part of the service, these companies prepare and email bills to tenants and even manage payments, eliminating the need for the property owner or manager to handle this on a monthly basis.

The Installation Process

For apartments, townhomes, condos, manufactured home communities and other types of residential or commercial applications, a smart meter located on the main water line into the unit is required for automated meter reading services. This meter can be installed indoors or outdoors. It is small and compact and can be installed in existing plumbing systems or at the time of new construction.

The Meter Reading Process

Through the smart meter, the automated meter reading is completed through the transmission of data over a secure network, which is separate from any home WiFi or internet service. The transmission of data is controlled by ANSI standards and uses specific communication protocols developed by the IEC or International Electrotechnical Commission.

The utility billing company receives the transmission from the smart meter on a schedule. The meter only records and transmits the amount of water used by the unit; it cannot monitor use by individual appliances or fixtures.

Fur fans flock to Toronto’s Furnal Equinox 2019

Monday, March 25, 2019

From March 15 to 17, the Canadian city of Toronto played host to the tenth Furnal Equinox, an annual event dedicated to the “furry fandom.” Wikinews attended. Programming ranged from music to gender, science to art, covering dozens of aspects of the varied subculture. The event’s featured guests were visual artists Moth Monarch and Cat-Monk Shiro, as well as the co-owners of US fursuit costume builders Don’t Hug Cacti.

The event raised nearly CDN$11,000 for Pet Patrol, a non-profit rescue organization in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, run by volunteers. This exceeded their goal of $10,000, the funds needed to finish a rural sanctuary. The furry community is well-known for their charitable efforts. Along with direct donations, the funds were raised through a charity auction offering original artwork, and a fursuit design by guests of honour “Don’t Hug Cacti.” Last year, Furnal Equinox raised funds for a farm animal sanctuary.

While only 10–15% of people within the fandom own a fursuit according to a 2011 study, event organizers reported this year 908 of the 2240 attendees at Furnal Equinox brought at least one elaborate outfit to the event. The outfits are usually based on original characters, known as “fursonas”.

Guests of Honour Cherie and Sean O’Donnell, known within the community as “Lucky and Skuff Coyote”, held a session on fursuit construction on Saturday afternoon. The married couple are among the most prominent builders in the fandom, under the name Don’t Hug Cacti. The scale of their business was evident, as Sean had made over a thousand pairs of “handpaws”, costume gloves.

The couple encouraged attendees to continue developing their technique, sharing that all professional fursuit makers had developed different techniques. They felt that they learned more from failed projects than successful ones, citing the Chuck Jones quote that “every artist has thousands of bad drawings,” and that you have to work through them to achieve. Cherie, known as Lucky, recalled receiving a Sylvester the Cat plush toy from a Six Flags theme park at age 10. She promptly hollowed the toy out, turning it into a costume. Creating a costume isn’t without its hazards: the company uses 450°F (232°C) glue guns. They’re “like sticking your hand in an oven.”

Other programming included improv comedy, dances, life drawing of fursuiters, a review of scientific research by a research group at four universities called FurScience, a pin collector’s social, and workshops in writing.

The “Dealer’s Den” hall was expanded this year, with even more retailers and artists. While many offered “furry” versions of traditional products, at least one business focused on “pushing the boundaries of fursuit technology.” Along with 3D printing a bone-shaped name tag when Wikinews visited, Grivik was demonstrating miniature computer screens that could be used as “eyes” for a fursuit. The electronic displays projected an animation of eyes looking around, blinking occasionally. The maker has also developed “a way to install a camera inside suit heads, to improve fursuiter visibility.” He hopes the tech would reduce suiting risks and accidents. Without the need for eyeholes, fursuit makers would have “more options for building different eyestyles.”

International participants showcase different industry cultures at 2008 Taipei Game Show

Friday, January 25, 2008

B2B Trade Area of Taipei Game Show, criticized by trade buyers last year, but accompanied with 2008 Taiwan Digital Content Forum, moved to the second floor at Taipei World Trade Center for world-wide participants with a better exchange atmosphere this year.

Not only local OBMs (Softstar Entertainment, Soft-World International Corp., International Games System Corp., …, etc.) but also companies from New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea showcased different specialists with multiple styles. Especially on South Korea, participated members from G? Trade Show (Game Show & Trade, All-Round, aka Gstar) showcased gaming industry of South Korea and the G? upcoming at this November with brochures.

In the 2-days Digital Content Forum, world-class experts not only shared industry experiences, members from Taiwan Gaming Industry Association also discussed and forecasted marketing models for gaming industry. With participations from governmental, industrial, and academical executives world-wide, this forum helps them gained precious experiences of digital content industry from several countries.

According to the Taipei Computer Association, the show and forum organizer, the digital content industry in Taiwan was apparently grown up recent years as Minister of Economic Affairs of the Republic of China Steve Ruey-long Chen said at Opening Ceremony yesterday. Without R&Ds from cyber-gaming, and basic conceptions from policies and copyright issues, this (digital content) industry will be fallen down in Taiwan. If this industry wanted to be grown up in sustainability, gaming OBMs in Taiwan should independently produce different and unique games and change market style to market brands and games to the world.

While most large towns are densely populated throughout the Californian coast, the San Anselmo area provides you with the unique opportunity to live in a prosperous area that values its natural surroundings more than development.

As a result, many of the San Anselmo homes while being fashionable and artsy are surrounded by wide acres of woodland and natural parks, thus giving you the opportunity to live in a town amidst natural beauty. As a result of the unique lay of the land, there are many great outdoor activities throughout the San Anselmo area including a plethora of hiking and biking trails, as well as beaches that are within a twenty minute drive and other Bay Shore coastal ranges. In fact, you may even consider taking a short bicycle ride over to the beach, and then continuing up the beach a little to reach the vineyards that lay adjacent to both Sonoma and Napa Valley so you can sample the area s finest wines before traveling home.

The perfect weather allows you to stroll San Anselmo s downtown area and check out the many quaint antique and specialty shops that adorn the town as often as you like. The residents and merchants are extremely friendly which makes the downtown area of San Anselmo a popular destination for people from across the entire San Francisco Bay Area.

Of course, if you are worried about everyday shopping, there are many shopping outlets in the San Anselmo area and San Francisco is always only a 20 minute drive away. This makes San Anselmo a wonderful place to live if you want to work in the city, but play outdoors.

While visiting San Anselmo can be entertaining, the area has become increasingly popular with Bay Area home buyers looking for a relaxed lifestyle, excellent public schools, and moderately priced real estate in Marin County, California. Most residential real estate in San Anselmo consists of single-family homes and condominiums however the town also has its fair share of buildable land and lots which are not always easy to come by in Marin County. For those looking for buildable land in Marin, San Anselmo is a great town worthy of consideration, especially if your plans include a modernist prefab dwelling or a green, eco-friendly home that would blend in perfectly with its surroundings.

Wikinews interviews 2020 US Libertarian Party presidential candidate Adam Kokesh

Saturday, September 7, 2019

Adam Kokesh, an Iraq War veteran, activist, radio show host, and currently a candidate for the US Libertarian Party’s 2020 presidential nomination, spoke with Wikinews to discuss his background, political positions, and campaign for President of the United States.

Kokesh, who hails from Arizona, has been active in the anti-war movement since returning home from combat in Iraq. After an initial honorary discharge from active duty with the US Marine Corp in 2006, Kokesh was given a general discharge from the Marine Forces Reserve in 2007 after images of him wearing his uniform while participating in a protest with the Iraq Veterans Against the War were published in The Washington Post. Kokesh has also been involved in demonstrations in support of free speech, gun rights, and marijuana decriminalization. Some of these activities have resulted in his arrest. Kokesh previously hosted a show on RT and currently hosts a show on internet radio.

Politically, Kokesh supported the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns of Ron Paul. He was a featured speaker at Paul’s Rally for the Republic in 2008. Kokesh ran for US Congress as a Republican in 2010 in New Mexico and for US Senate in Arizona in 2018. He announced his 2020 candidacy in 2013 during a jailhouse interview. He has based his campaign on the pledge to begin “dissolving the federal government in a peaceful, orderly manner” and to resign as president and take the title of “Custodian of the Federal Government.”

Other contenders for the Libertarian Party’s 2020 presidential nomination include former Libertarian Party Vice Chairman Arvin Vohra, businessman John McAfee, and New Hampshire state representative Max Abramson. Congressman Justin Amash and former Rhode Island governor and US Senator Lincoln Chafee are both reportedly considering runs. Former New York gubernatorial candidate Larry Sharpe and former Massachusetts governor William Weld were both previously considered potential candidates but Sharpe suggested he would not run and Weld has decided to run in the 2020 Republican Party presidential primaries, challenging President Donald Trump.

With accredited Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn, Kokesh details his background and activism, his thoughts on the Libertarian Party, the Presidency of Donald Trump, and the goals for his campaign and presidency.

Condominiums and apartments at former mental hospital burn to the ground

Saturday, April 7, 2007

The former State Lunatic Hospital at Danvers better known as Danvers State Hospital in Danvers, Massachusetts suffered a major fire last night that could be seen for miles and led to temporary shut down of US Route 1 and Interstate 95 in the area.

The infamous American former mental hospital has been closed since 1992 is the site of a new condominium and apartment buliding complex being developed by Avalon Bay Communities. Four apartment units and four utilities bulidings went in up in smoke in the four-alarm fire. The units were not occupied, however, two were nearing completion which is a major financial setback for Avalon Bay. The fire did not spread to the famous Kirkbride building though, which is being renovated into apartments, aside from a cupola due to radiant heat.

Calls started coming just before 2:00 am EDT Saturday morning to report a fire on the hospital’s grounds which before the development sat unused, decaying and abandoned and became a popular target for ghost-hunters, vandals and urban explorers and also served as the focus of the 2001 thriller/horror film, Session 9 which brought renewed attention to infamous hospital which led to increased security at the site over the years. Reports of explosions before the fire started were noted by neighbors and residents.

About 20 residents on the other side of the 77-acre property were evacuated to Danvers High School as a precaution, they are expected to return later today. Their homes were not harmed by the fire, nor were any injuries reported from them. However, about seven firefighters suffered some minor burns from battling the fire, which took seven hours to bring under control. Firefighters will remain on the scene to make sure no hot spots flare up as the fire is still smoldering.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Interview with Brazilian blogger Ricardo Serran Lobo

Wednesday, January 18, 2006

Ricardo Serran Lobo is a Brazilian blogger who writes about his famous neighbor, the politician Roberto Jefferson, head of the Brazilian Labor Party in the Brazilian Congress of Deputies. Jefferson has become a major figure in the ongoing Brazilian mensalão scandal revolving around corruption and bribery.

Vizinho do Jefferson [1] quickly became very popular among Brazilians, describing the routine of Jefferson, while providing information about politics and fresh news about the scandal. Lobo’s blog got third place in the Best Of Blogs contest run by Deutsche Welle International.

Lobo gets an intimate look at the center of Brazilian politics by living in Brasilia, near residences of parliamentarians (including Roberto Jefferson), public buildings and the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies. Or, as he says in his blog: “near the eye of the hurricane,” a reference to the recent political crisis.

At first, Lobo began describing the daily activities of his famous neighbor deputy Roberto Jefferson. As the crisis moved on, he began to describe the political events regarding it. His writings evolved to not only what is going on with Jefferson, but what is going on in Brazilian Congress, and has interviewed politicians, including Roberto Jefferson himself.

The blog tries to be informative, with a lot of humour (common with Brazilians), and some protests against the bad habits of Brazilian politics in general.

Jefferson’s neighbor, the blog, is an example of citizen journalism and it shows that ordinary people can compete with professional media.

Fixing Up An Old Home

Fixing Up An Old Home by Scott WhiteIf your home is aging like many homes across America are, you’re no doubt paying higher than expected heating and cooling costs, living with floor layouts that don’t add to your quality of life, and having to look everyday at walls, trim, ceilings, door and windows that just make your life seem drab. Some home buyers avoid considering old homes at all for purchase, even despite a significantly lower price and being in an established neighbourhood with trees. The fact is, many old homes are dreary, yet they can be remodelled and renovated to improve the living space, and incorporate many desirable features of new homes. The home renovation industry is booming right now as people take out small second mortgages to upgrade their homes. Should you do the same? Why not? You’ve been working hard year after year and it’s time to make your life more creative and relaxing. You’re in your house a lot. Most people spend 3 to 6 hours a day on average in their homes along with 6 to 8 hours of sleeping in bedrooms. One of the reasons people move and go through the expense and turmoil of moving into a new home is to escape what they see as an unattractive, dysfunctional living space. Other homeowners just grin and bare living in a deteriorating house and only make renovations and improvements in emergency situations. Given the psychological effect your home has on you, your family and friends who visit, why not consider ways you can upgrade? From decreasing heating and air conditioning costs, to improving safety, to increasing the useable living space, a renovation can create the environment that will make you feel better.Let’s start with costs and risks. Old houses can be very expensive. Roofs wear out to the point where rain and moisture are leaking through causing nasty rot of house framing and even ruining walls, attic insulation, and the carpeting in upper floors. There are those who will leave their roof problems until it’s too late. That’s when more than shingling has to be done. Old electrical wiring can be a big hazard and leave you with little confidence about its safety. Old walls have lead-based paint that can leak out slowly into the surrounding dusty air and it represents a health risk to growing children. Plumbing could be plugged with years of calcium build up so that water won’t flow through, or the water is slightly contaminated with lead particles. Bathrooms are often too small in older homes. By redesigning the layout you can expand your bathroom and include spa-like features to make it a more relaxing place for you to enjoy. Your house siding may not be doing the job it used to in protecting and insulating the house. The siding on your house is the first thing you or anyone else sees at your property. People do associate you with the appearance of your home, every time they drive by it. If it looks like a dump, that doesn’t give them the warm fuzzies. New siding products are available that make your home look like a million dollars. And there’s exterior trim products that can give a distinctive, elegant appearance that shows your good taste in architecture. Your new home could make a huge adjustment in how others see you.Old homes were often built as a collection of small rooms, but today these small isolated rooms lead to a feeling of isolation in family members. Windows were small and often wouldn’t even open because of paint and wood expansion problems. The overwhelming trend today in home building is toward open concept designs that allow more interaction between household members. People’s busy lifestyles mean they’re not spending as much time with one another and this leads to social and emotional problems. Walls can be knocked out to make new rooms that are bigger and open allowing better positioning of furniture. Kitchens, living rooms and dining rooms are connected. The end result is more usability and a less closed, stuffy atmosphere. The new designs encourage communication, shared experiences, and more imaginative living.Increase Your Living SpaceOn the topic of increased living space, and old house can certainly benefit from having an outside deck or patio. Deck materials, designs, and construction are much improved today as opposed to 50 years ago. Composite decking boards can last decades without much deterioration, and they look great. Deck designs today take the indoor living space outside where people can enjoy fresh air and nature. Whether surrounding the pool or just being a place where you can relax in the shade and feel a nice cool breeze on a hot sunny day, decks can lift your spirit. They’re also often cheaper than an interior home renovation. For those living in northern climates such as the New England area, more time is spent indoors, so interior improvements might provide more enjoyment. Three season rooms can be built onto your home if you prefer to have an outdoorsy place to sit and relax. If your kitchen is looking like a war zone with old plywood cabinets, plasterboard walls with vinyl wallpaper and barely any space to prepare and cook meals, then a kitchen renovation is in order. Stairways with old worn carpet could use a makeover too. How about new stair railings to spruce up your passageways? Before you set sail on your new home adventure, take a look at some interior design possibilities. There are plenty of styles from Victorian to Cape Cod cottages, to ultra modern condo lofts. There’s real wood products made from cedar and hardwoods that can lift your home’s appearance and resale value. Your last task before going ahead with your home renovation is to choose building materials and products including composite decking materials, roofing and house siding products, exterior and interior trim, flooring, railing systems and flooring. So don’t give up on your old house just yet. Consider what it would look like if it was remodelled and retrofitted with a modern design. You can have a new home without the huge price and you’ll still be living in an established neighborhood with trees.Boston Cedar is a distributor of composite decking , deck building products, deck railings , siding, and millwork products.Article Source: eArticlesOnline.com
