Easy Home Remedies For Acidity And Constipation}

Submitted by: Vikram Chauhan

Now a days, majority of the people are not following classical eating food habits. Taking pizza, burger, nooddles etc. with fruit juices or milk shakes is a typical example of incompatible food which leads to the formation of Aamras(toxic substance) and it is the main cause for majority of the diseases. People normally eat outside. Due to this they are not aware about the type of oil used, the way of processing food, spices used etc. As a result food is not digested properly and it provokes various gastric problems like- constipation, acidity, ulcers and so on. As we are dependent on packaged food, these possess significant percentage of coloring agents, preservatives, emulsifiers, stabilisers etc. All these increase Pitta and cause gastric irritation in the long run.In this article, we are going to discuss about the two common gastric problems from which majority of the population is suffering. These are- constipation and acidity. These two problems are the root causes of various chronic problems if not diagnosed and treated early.

Constipation:

Our large intestine is designed to store feces for a certain amount of time. So, holding feces for a longer time is not a big task for it. The problem is that lack of bowel movements for a long period of time sends wrong signals to the brain, liver, immune system etc. leading to migraine and other problems. It looks like a simple problem, if it is not treated properly, it may lead to a major problem.

Constipation according to Ayurveda- results due to Vata imbalance and blockage of channels. Vata mainly Apana Vata is responsible for expulsion of stool. When the functions of Apana Vata are affected, it results in constipation. Ayurvedic treatment includes prescription of laxatives, external oleation, use of suppositories.

What are the causes of Constipation?

Intake of dry, light, rough quality of food

Excessive consumption of pungent, salty and astringent foods

Less intake of wate

Night awakening

Sitting at a same place for a very long period of time

Neurological disorders such as- Parkinson’s disease

Suffering from rheumatoid arthritis

Lack of sufficient fiber in diet

Pregnancy(fetus putting pressure on intestines which causes lack of bowel movements)

Depression

What are the complications of constipation?

If left untreated, patient may develop other problems like- fissures in ano, hemorroids, liver disorders, intestinal, metabolic disorders.

Acidity:

Certain food habits cause increase HCl secretion in stomach leading to the irritation of stomach inner lining. If spices are used excessively, it can cause irritation to gastric mucosa and hence rersults in gastritis (acidity). According to modern medicine, prolonged intake of NSAIDS (pain killers) is also the main cause for this disease.

Acidity according to Ayurveda- Ayurveda considers acidity is of Pitta origin. All measures must be taken to pacify Pitta; otherwise the medicament should subside the irritation. Ayurvedic classical text books emphasise to follow satvik diet. But, it will not be possible all the time. Secondly, our tongue has developed taste for spicy and tasty food all the time. The spices such as- cinnamon, red chili, garlic if used excessively can cause irritation of gastric mucosa.

Knowingly or unknowingly our daily food is full of sour substances. According to Ayurveda, acidity is caused by those substances which are remaining as sour or transformed into pungent material after digestion whereas all sour substances such as- Indian gooseberry, lemon, oranges, pomegranate are not the agents of gastritis.

Ayurveda emphasizes stress, jealousy, anger are the reasons for this disease along with wrong eating habits. If this condition is not treated timely or else if unwholesome food habits are continued, it may lead to gastric ulcer, mal-absorption, perforation, esophageal regurgitation, headache, duodenitis, backache etc.

What are the causes of Acidity?

Intake of sour substances

Intake of spicy food

Intake of incompatible food

Heat provoking foods, beverages etc.

What are the symptoms of Acidity?

Severe burning sensation with thirst

Sour taste in the mouth

Nausea

Fatigue(especially in the legs)

Pricking in the shoulder or back

Neuritis(ant moving sensation over the body)

Irregular bowel habits

Vomiting

Al Sharpton speaks out on race, rights and what bothers him about his critics

Al Sharpton speaks out on race, rights and what bothers him about his critics

Monday, December 3, 2007

At Thanksgiving dinner David Shankbone told his white middle class family that he was to interview Reverend Al Sharpton that Saturday. The announcement caused an impassioned discussion about the civil rights leader’s work, the problems facing the black community and whether Sharpton helps or hurts his cause. Opinion was divided. “He’s an opportunist.” “He only stirs things up.” “Why do I always see his face when there’s a problem?”

Shankbone went to the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem with this Thanksgiving discussion to inform the conversation. Below is his interview with Al Sharpton on everything from Tawana Brawley, his purported feud with Barack Obama, criticism by influential African Americans such as Clarence Page, his experience running for President, to how he never expected he would see fifty (he is now 53). “People would say to me, ‘Now that I hear you, even if I disagree with you I don’t think you’re as bad as I thought,'” said Sharpton. “I would say, ‘Let me ask you a question: what was “bad as you thought”?’ And they couldn’t say. They don’t know why they think you’re bad, they just know you’re supposed to be bad because the right wing tells them you’re bad.”

BC election writ drops; referendum campaigns underway

BC election writ drops; referendum campaigns underway

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

The provincial election was called today in British Columbia. Alongside with the election, the citizens of the province will also be debating if they should change their electoral system from Single Member Plurality to Single Transferable Vote (STV). The vote for both the election and the referendum is to be held on May 12th.

According to the Angus Reid Strategies online poll, the issues before the candidates this year are the economy, crime and public safety, and health care.

Gordon Campbell is the current Premier of British Columbia, and leader of the Liberal Party. Three new tax measures have been proposed, increasing apprenticeship training tax credits, reducing small business income tax, and raising the revenue definition for small business. “Keep B.C. Strong” is the Liberal slogan.

The New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Carole James is focusing her election platform on supporting a green economy, eliminating the carbon tax, offering families tax relief, freezing post-secondary tuition, raising the minimum wage, and providing a small business tax holiday. The NDP slogan is “Take back your B.C.”

The Green Party, led by Jane Sterk, is focused on environmental issues, crime and police, and a ‘green economy’. The Green Party is in support of the carbon tax and will be campaigning in favour of the new STV voting system that is being proposed again. The Green Party slogan is “A better plan for B.C.”File:Carole james.jpg

Wilf Hanni is at the helm of the Conservative Party which opposes the Recognition and Reconciliation Act, privatization of BC Hydro Bill 42 ‘gag law’, and the carbon tax. They propose to reduce senior civil employee pay scale, as well as personal and corporate income tax.

Other parties running candidates are the Democratic Reform under Graeme Roger, the Marijuana Party under Marc Emery, the Work Less Party under Conrad Schmidt, the Refederation Party under Mike Summers, the Sex Party under John Ince, and the Communist Party under George Gidora.

For 60 days before the election, each party may campaign with an allowable CA$1.1 million, in the final 28 days, $4.4 million may be spent. $70,000 is allowed by candidates before the writ is dropped, and another $70,000 in the midst of campaigning.

The referendum will allow BC voters to choose between two voting systems. The Single Member Plurality system is the current system in all Canadian provinces, and is also used to elect Members of Parliament in Ottawa. The other system is BC-STV, which would replace 85 single-member ridings with 20 larger ridings in which between two and seven Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) would be elected. The total number of MLAs will not change. Voters would rank the candidates in order of preference, as many or as few as they wish. When the results are tallied, votes are transferred to the next preference on the ballot when the first preference has been elected or eliminated. The system is designed to ensure that every vote helps to elect someone, every vote counts as fully as possible, and every voter is represented by a candidate they voted for, as nearly as mathematically possible.

Previous elections held under the current Single Member Plurality (also known as First Past The Post) system led to odd results in certain elections, such as the 2001 election where the winning party obtained 77 of the 79 seats of the legislature with just 58% of the vote, and the 1996 election, in which the party with the most votes failed to win the election. The recommendation to switch to STV was made by the British Columbia Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform, a group formed in 2004 of randomly selected citizens. They spent a year learning about voting systems around the world and consulting with BC citizens.

It’s the fourth referendum in the country and the second in the province within the last 4 years. The previous referendum held in 2005 also voted on these same electoral systems and came within 2.3% of the 60% threshold. In order for the referendum to be binding, BC-STV will again need 60% of the popular vote and 50% of votes in 51 of the 85 ridings in BC. If the change is approved, it will be the first province in the country to adopt reform of the electoral system in recent history.

Fair Voting BC, recognized as the official proponent group, argues that STV will lead to fairer election results, effective local representation and greater voter choice. They argue that BC-STV will give voters the power to hold politicians and political parties accountable, by giving every voter a vote that actually makes a difference. If the STV system is approved, then it will be put into use for the first time for the 2013 provincial election.

The recognized opponent group is the No STV Campaign Society. Their arguments are that STV will give larger ridings, voters would be unsure of whom their MLA would be, there would be unequal geographic representation, that the counting method is too complicated, the electoral system results are unverified in practical usage, the system results in a higher probability of minority governments and the subsequent coalition of parties. They also argue that other countries who use systems similar to STV have had problems with their election results.

$500,000 in public funding has been given to both the proponents and the opponents of the referendum.

Glencore announces Tahmoor mine in New South Wales to close

Glencore announces Tahmoor mine in New South Wales to close

Friday, June 3, 2016

Swiss mining company Glencore announced yesterday the closure of its coal mine in Tahmoor, New South Wales, Australia. The mine is to be closed by early 2019, pointing to the downturn of coal prices in global markets.

Glencore stated, “The decision has been made as a result of continued low prices in global coal markets, which has meant the economic return from reserves still available at Tahmoor are not sufficient to warrant the investment required to mine them”.

The closure will result in a loss of 350 jobs according to the company, who said they are consulting with the employees.

The mine is not the only operation impacted by the fall of global coal and commodity prices. The Australian arm of mining magnate Peabody Energy has reported losses of almost A$3 billion in 2015. According to latest financial reports for Peabody subsidiary Peabody Australia Holdco lodged via Australian Securities and Investments Commission, the company earned a net loss of A$2.7 billion — after a loss of A$1.2 billion in 2014. Accountants at Peabody Australia have warned the mine might not be able to continue operating, with the market persistently weak since December.

Despite low coal and commodity prices, both the major political parties have been supportive of coal mines. While appearing on the ABC’s Q&A program on Monday night, Coalition MP Steve Ciobo confirmed party support of coal mines. In response to an audience member question, concerning what policies the panellists had planned to combat job and economic loses in Queensland after the mining boom, Ciobo stated the Coalition government supports Adani’s new Carmichael mine in the Galilee Basin — as an example of “transitioning” the state’s economy.

Labor MP Terri Butler said although she doesn’t personally support Adani’s Carmichael project, the state Labor government “didn’t have much discretion” surrounding its approval. Meanwhile, Greens party leader Richard Di Natale criticised responses from the panellists claiming the “great tragedy” is both major parties support of coal mines such as Carmichael.

“If you care about tourism you don’t open up a whopping great big coal mine and fuel catastrophic global warming”, said Di Natale.

Di Natale accused both major parties of being deceitful in “slashing” both the target of and agency funding for renewable energy, leaving no plan to realize the investment potential of the renewable sector.

Getting An Early Peak With Ultrasound Machines

By Gary Gordon

Medical ultrasound equipment works on basic principals. These machines act in the same way that bats do when they fly. First, the machine sends out high frequency sound waves into the body. These waves all travel at the same speed until they come to some sort of a differential. This might be where bone meets tissue or fluids meet tissue. At this border, some of the waves are reflected back to the medical ultrasound equipment, while others continue on. Once all the waves have returned, the machine determines the distance of the borders by using the length of time that the waves took to return, the intensity of the wave, and the density of tissue. All of this happens in micro-seconds, and the results appear instantaneously. The screen of the medical ultrasound equipment then shows these distance differences and the intensities usually as a two-dimensional image. The view of the image can be changed simply by moving the probe around or changing its angle.

There are two other types of medical ultrasound equipment. One of which is the blood doppler machine. This uses the same principal behind doppler radar to image the interior of the body. Rather than using the time and intensities of returned sound waves, doppler machines use the frequencies. A wave that returns with a higher frequency means that the object is moving toward the probe, and a lower frequency indicates movement away. The change in frequency determines the speed of the object. This is a helpful tool in the field of cardiology for measuring blood as it flows through the circulatory system.

Another kind is 3-D imaging medical ultrasound equipment . This compiles many two dimensional images gathered by either inserting the probe into the body or by changing its angle outside. Dozens of 2-D imaging are fed into a computer that does the calculations to give a three dimensional readout. This type of medical ultrasound equipment has proven invaluable to obstetricians looking at fetuses and oncologists examining tumors.

Imaging is also likely to improve as well, but for now, it is vital that the doctor has quality medical ultrasound equipment. This will offer the clearest readout as well as having the ability to print the images. Obstetricians already know how important the printer is, since every mother-to-be wants a copy from the medical ultrasound equipment as her first baby picture. A hard copy is also a useful backup for any imaging session, in case computer files are destroyed or lost. Due to their diagnostic nature, medical ultrasound equipment is not likely to diminish in their use or popularity. As more and more improvements are made especially in 3-D imaging and doppler, physicians will find more uses for them, and not having one in the office will be seen as a detriment to the patient.

Medical ultrasound equipment is a widely used piece of medical equipment, implemented by doctors from many different fields. While most associate them with obstetrics, they are also used to image the heart and circulatory systems as well as in the field of urology. Any physician worth his salt knows that having reliable medical ultrasound equipment that is easy to use and interpret could mean the difference between a positive or negative diagnosis. A mistake such as that could cost the patient his life, and the practitioner his livelihood.

California meat packing firm recalls 143M pounds of beef

California meat packing firm recalls 143M pounds of beef

Sunday, February 17, 2008

I am dismayed at the in-humane handling of cattle that has resulted in the violation of food safety regulations at the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company.

In a press release today, California-based Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. indicated that it has voluntarily recalled just over 143 million pounds (65 million kilograms) of raw and frozen beef products, which is considered to be the largest single recall of beef products in U.S. history. The move follows an investigation by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) into allegations of animal cruelty and mishandling of cattle destined for the human food chain.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) had determined that beef products produced by the Chino, California company were unfit for human consumption as the cattle had not received “complete and proper inspection.”

The recall has been designated as Class II, which the USDA describes as “a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.”

On Friday, Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer indicated that charges had been laid against employees of the plant alleged to have taken part in the mistreatment of cattle. “Today [Friday], the San Bernardino District Attorney filed felony animal cruelty charges against two employees who were terminated by Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company,” said Schafer. “It is regrettable that these animals were mistreated and I am encouraged and supportive of these actions by the San Bernardino District Attorney in response to this mistreatment.”

The USDA learned of the possible inhumane handling of non-ambulatory (disabled) cattle at the packing plant on January 30 and has since suspended activities at the plant. “We continue to conduct a thorough investigation into whether any violations of food safety or additional humane handling regulations have occurred,” said Secretary Schafer in a press release. “On February 8, our Office of the Inspector General took the lead on the investigation. At that time, USDA extended the administrative hold on Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company products for the National School Lunch Program, the Emergency Food Assistance Program and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations while the investigation continues,” said Schafer.

The FSIS reported that Hallmark/Westland had not contacted the FSIS public health veterinarian, as required, when cattle became ill or disabled after undergoing ante-mortem (slaughter) inspection, putting the company out of compliance with FSIS regulations. “Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection FSIS has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall,” explained Secretary Schafer.

The cruelty charges stem from an undercover video that reportedly showed sick cattle being moved by crews using forklifts.

“Words cannot accurately express how shocked and horrified I was at the depictions contained on the video that was taken by an individual who worked at our facility from October 3 thru November 14, 2007,” said Steve Mendell, President, Westland Meat Co. and Hallmark Meat Packing. “We have taken swift action regarding the two employees identified on the video and have already implemented aggressive measures to ensure all employees follow our humane handling policies and procedures. We are also cooperating with the USDA investigators on the allegations of inhumane handling treatment which is a serious breech of our company’s policies and training.”

The USDA stressed that it is “extremely unlikely” that the cattle involved were at risk for Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad-cow disease due to the employment of multiple safeguards. The USDA felt the recall was required, however, as the plant had allegedly violated USDA regulations.

The recall involves raw and frozen beef products produced on various dates from February 1, 2006 to February 2, 2008. For further information about the recall, consumers, media, and distributors are encouraged to contact Hallmark/Westland’s Plant Manager Stan Mendell or Food Safety Consultant Steve Sayer at (909) 590-3340 or the FSIS website, www.fsis.usda.gov.

Wikinews interviews former Salt Lake City mayor and 2012 presidential candidate Rocky Anderson

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Former Salt Lake City mayor and human rights activist Rocky Anderson took some time to discuss his 2012 U.S. presidential campaign and the newly-created Justice Party with Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Anderson served as mayor of Salt Lake City for eight years (2000–2008) as a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, he enacted proposals to reduce the city’s carbon emissions, reformed its criminal justice system, and positioned it as a leading sanctuary for refugees. After leaving office, Anderson grew critical of the Democratic Party’s failure to push for impeachment against President George W. Bush, and for not reversing policies on torture, taxes, and defense spending. He left the party earlier this year and announced that he would form a Third party.

Anderson officially established the Justice Party last week during a press conference in Washington D.C.. He proclaimed “We the people are powerful enough to end the perverse government-to-the-highest-bidder system sustained by the two dominant parties…We are here today for the sake of justice — social justice, environmental justice and economic justice.” The party promotes campaign finance reform and is attempting to appeal to the Occupy Wall Street movement. It is currently working on ballot access efforts, and will hold a Founding Convention in February 2012 in Salt Lake City.

Among other issues, Anderson discussed climate change, health care, education, and civil liberties. He detailed his successes as mayor of Salt Lake City, stressed the importance of executive experience, and expressed his views on President Barack Obama and some of the Republican Party presidential candidates. He spoke in depth about former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, with whom he worked during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and fellow Utahan, former governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, Jr..
