New Zealand man sentenced to life in prison for murder

Tuesday, August 22, 2006

James Junior Lawrie, 26-year-old, has been sentenced to life in prison at the Auckland High Court for a minimum of 16 years after he killed the Uptown Mini Mart owner 58-year-old Bhagubhai Vaghela on 19 June, 2005.

Vaghela was found dead at the scene by ambulance officers.

Lawrie had entered the store planning on stealing phone cards from the New North Road shop. Instead he shot Vaghela in the chest at point-blank range when he activated the alarm and Lawrie panicked.

Lawrie had pleaded guilty to the charges laid against him even though he could not remember most of the incident. The court was told today by the prosecutor Ross Burns that he had smoked one kilogram of methamphetamine (P) two months prior, which is worth NZ$1 million. The P had fuelled six previous aggravated robberies in the attempt to gain more money for his P habit. Lawrie has had 32 previous convictions of which nine were relating to violence.

Roger Chambers, Lawrie’s lawyer, said: “Lawrie’s late expression of remorse is genuine, in spite of a pre-sentencing report that said he had no recognition of the trauma he had caused to his victims. He pleaded guilty to some pretty horrendous crimes – and knew that any expression of remorse was likely to be laughed at. For Lawrie, prison is home.”

Burns said, “Mr Vaghela had come to New Zealand to enjoy a well-deserved and planned retirement. He was a kind, considerate and gentle man who put his family first.” His wife had now gone back to India where she has been ill, while the rest of the family struggle with the death. “His son had said: ‘This world is a far worse place without my father being here’,” the court was told by Burns.

Lawrie had shown no remorse, Burns said.

Using Local Listings To Improve Search Engine Rankings

By Simon Volkov

Local listings refer to online directories that offer pertinent information about businesses. Companies receiving top listings have the potential to obtain new customers and improve search engine rankings.

Uploading information to local listings directories is a tedious task as there are numerous online directories. Most require hand-submission of business name, address, local number, toll-free number, fax number, email and website address. This can easily consume 80+ man-hours.

Many businesses submit to the major search providers such as Google, Bing and Yahoo, but neglect to submit to the hundreds of lesser known search engines. Taking time to establish multiple local listings provides multiple benefits. One of the most prevalent is each listing provides an inbound link.

Websites are ranked on many factors including the number of quality websites that link back to them. Quality links improve page rank which, in turn, helps improve search engine ranking. Higher rankings allow businesses to be easily found and can help increase sales.

In addition to publishing local listings via directories, businesses should also publish to online phone directories, local social listings, and data providers and aggregators. Companies should include local listings within their online marketing plan. Publishing will be an ongoing task because new listing websites open nearly every day.

It is wise to follow-up on published listings on a regular basis. Listings should be checked for accuracy immediately upon publication. Directory service provider employees typically transcribe provided information into their database. Computer glitches and human error can occur, so follow up to ensure listings are correct. Promptly contact the listing company to resolve issues if erroneous information appears.

Publishing via local social listings has advantages and disadvantages. These interactive directories encourage visitors to write product and company reviews. While good reviews can be good for business, bad reviews tend to spread like wildfire.

It is strongly recommended to implement tracking methods that provide instant notification when unsolicited reviews are published. If reviews are demagogic it might be necessary to request removal through the directory provider.

It is also advantageous to receive notification of positive reviews. This venue provides abundant opportunities to build customer relations. Personal testimonials can be shared on company websites and blogs or through social media marketing outlets. Additionally, testimonials provided via social listings helps build consumer trust due to their unbiased nature.

When consumers visit social listing sites such as Yelp and InsiderPages they are usually looking for a local business as well as customer reviews. Taking time to publish at social directories is a smart marketing technique that can improve sales and search engine rankings.

Local listings, link building, and customer reviews are highly beneficial in the online world, but are only one element of Internet marketing. It can be helpful to build a network of service providers in order to capitalize on the variety of marketing strategies. These might include website developers and designers, freelance writers, online marketing company, and marketing consultants.

No one is capable of managing all facets of Internet marketing alone. Working with an online marketing agency can relieve burdens and yield impressive ad campaigns.

Building brand awareness online involves incorporating multiple strategies which can include podcasting, online videos, social media, mobile marketing, national and local listings. Marketing agencies can provide required services at a fraction of the cost to purchase software and equipment or hire employees.

Shimon Peres discusses the future of Israel

Shimon Peres discusses the future of Israel

Wednesday, January 9, 2008

This year Israel turns sixty and it has embarked upon a campaign to celebrate its birthday. Along with technology writers for Slate, PC Magazine, USA Today, BusinessWeek, Aviation Weekly, Wikinews was invited by the America-Israel Friendship League and the Israeli Foreign Ministry to review Israel’s technology sector. It’s part of an effort to ‘re-brand the country’ to show America that there is more to Israel than the Palestinian conflict. On this trip we saw the people who gave us the Pentium processor and Instant Messaging. The schedule was hectic: 12-14 hours a day were spent doing everything from trips to the Weizmann Institute to dinner with Yossi Vardi.

On Thursday, the fifth day of the junket, David Saranga of the foreign ministry was able to arrange an exclusive interview for David Shankbone with the President of Israel, Nobel Peace Prize recipient Shimon Peres. For over an hour they spoke about Iranian politics, whether Israel is in danger of being side-lined in Middle Eastern importance because of Arab oil wealth, and his thoughts against those who say Israeli culture is in a state of decay.

The only crime I committed was to be a little bit ahead of time. And if this is the reason for being controversial, maybe the reason is better than the result.

Shimon Peres spent his early days on kibbutz, a bygone socialist era of Israel. In 1953, at the age of 29, Peres became the youngest ever Director General of the Ministry of Defense. Forty years later it was Peres who secretly gave the green light for dialogue with Yassir Arafat, of the verboten Palestine Liberation Organization. It was still official Israeli policy to not speak with the PLO. Peres shares a Nobel Peace Prize with Yitzak Rabin and Arafat for orchestrating what eventually became the Oslo Accords. The “roadmap” that came out of Oslo remains the official Israeli (and American) policy for peace in the Palestinian conflict. Although the majority of Israeli people supported the plans, land for peace was met with a small but fiery resistance in Israel. For negotiating with Arafat, former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shouted at Peres, “You are worse than Chamberlain!” a reference to Hitler’s British appeaser. It was during this time of heated exchanges in the 1990s that Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by Yigal Amir, a Jew who thought it against Halakhic law to give up land given by God (Hashem).

Peres is the elder statesman of Israeli politics, but he remembers that he has not always been as popular as he is today. “Popularity is like perfume: nice to smell, dangerous to drink,” said Peres. “You don’t drink it.” The search for popularity, he goes on to say, will kill a person who has an idea against the status quo.

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with Shimon Peres, the President of Israel.

Toronto to have socialized city-wide wi-fi access

Thursday, March 9, 2006

Toronto’s public utility, Toronto Hydro Telecom, will make Canada’s largest city into a huge wireless hotspot.

“This is both an exciting and very important initiative for the city of Toronto”, said Toronto’s mayor, David Miller. “It puts us on the leading edge of the telecommunications industry nationwide and globally.”

Toronto Hydro Telecom will offer customers free access for the first six months. After that, it will begin to charge for services.

“Wi-Fi technology is the new benchmark for urban living”, stated Toronto Hydro president David Dobbin. “It’s standard equipment in many electronic devices, from laptops to portable entertainment units.”

Private telephone companies are questioning why a public utility needs to compete with the private sector.

Mike Lee of Rogers Communications Inc. questioned why the city of Toronto wanted to enter the internet access business.

“It will not be an easy business”, Lee told the National Post. “In this day and age, the focus should be on core operations more than anything. I was surprised to see they are looking to get into this business.”

Brian Sharwood, a telecom analyst in Toronto, said the municipality will likely install the wireless transmitters and receivers on its lamp posts as a way to blanket the city, a process known as “wireless mesh networking”.

Brazil’s Minas state stops sales of Toyota Corolla

Friday, April 23, 2010

Minas, one of the largest states of Brazil, has stopped the sale of the Toyota Corolla over safety concerns.

The move was made after nine Corolla customers reported that their cars automatically accelerated. The state public prosecutor’s office said in an online statement on Tuesday that the problem is blamed on accelerator pedals sticking underneath floor mats. Local government said the issue was “putting in danger the lives of occupants”.

According to the prosecutor’s office, sales of Corollas may resume when Toyota alters the floormats in its current models. Toyota has recalled over eight million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems.

Wikinews interviews U.S. Libertarian presidential candidate Wayne Allyn Root

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Wayne Allyn Root, one of the candidates for the Libertarian Party nomination for the 2008 U.S. presidential election.

Root is the founder and chairman of Winning Edge International Inc., a sports handicapping company based in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition, he is an author and a television producer, as well as an on-screen personality both as host and guest on several talk shows.

Root, a long-time Republican, declared his candidacy for the Libertarian Party on May 4, 2007.

He says he is concerned about the qualities of many who run for president, and fears that they do not know the needs of American citizens. He also says that they cater to big businesses instead of small ones.

He has goals of limiting the federal government and believes that the US went into Iraq for wrong reasons. A strong supporter of the War on Terror, he feels that it was mishandled. He has conservative values and came from a blue collar family in New York. He graduated from Columbia University with fellow presidential hopeful Barack Obama in 1983.

Root believes that America is in trouble and hopes to change that if elected.

Bankruptcy Judgments And How To Make Money With Them

By Mike T Warren

Before you sue, make sure your opponent is solvent and has assets you can grab.

Even after you win a lawsuit, you still have to collect the money you were awarded: your judgment. And the court won’t collect it for you — when it comes to collecting what you’re owed, you’re on your own.

Collecting from solvent individuals or businesses isn’t usually a problem, because most will routinely pay any judgments entered against them. If they don’t, there are a number of legal ways to force them to pay.

Unfortunately, some people and businesses sued in court are either broke (lawyers say “judgment proof”) or so adept at hiding their assets that collecting your winnings is likely to prove impossible.

Protected Property

When a deadbeat debtor won’t pay voluntarily, collecting your judgment can be difficult. Debtor protection laws keep you from seizing and selling many types of property, including the food from the debtor’s table, the clothing from her closet, and the TV from her living room.

Vehicle Protections

In many states it will even be impossible to seize and sell her car, because a debtor’s motor vehicle is protected from being sold to satisfy a debt if the amount of equity in the vehicle is below a certain amount (often about $2,000). And if the vehicle is used as a part of the debtor’s business (is a tool of her trade), you probably won’t be able to grab and sell it, even if the debtor’s equity is higher.

Bankrupt Debtors

If a person or a business declares bankruptcy under Chapter 7 of the Federal Bankruptcy Act and lists you as a creditor, your right to recover a small claims court judgment is cut off, along with most of his other debts. (If your judgment was based on a secured loan, however, you do have the right to recover the property pledged as security.) One big exception to this general rule exists if your judgment was obtained because you or your property were injured by the malicious behavior of the defendant: In this situation, your right to collect your judgment should survive the bankruptcy (but you may need to intervene in the bankruptcy proceeding). An example of malicious behavior would be someone getting drunk and then attacking and injuring you.

Garnishing Wages

If a person fails to pay a judgment voluntarily, the easiest way to collect is to garnish up to 25% of his wages. (The wages of very low income workers, however, are exempt from garnishment.) But you can’t garnish a welfare, Social Security, unemployment, pension, or disability check.

Levying on Deposit Accounts

Bank accounts and stocks and bonds are other common collection sources.

Levying on Real Estate

Real estate other than the debtor’s primary residence is another source for collection. (In many states, “homestead laws” prevent you from getting at the judgment debtor’s equity in a residence.)

Collecting From Business Receipts

Where a business is the judgment debtor, you can often collect by ordering the sheriff or marshal to take the amount of the judgment right out of the debtor’s cash register (this is called a “till tap”).

Another good source is a valuable piece of equipment or machinery owned by the business, which you can order sold to pay off your judgment.

But if the business is a fly-by-night outfit with no permanent address or obvious collection source, such as a cash register or owned fixtures or equipment, you may be out of luck (lots of businesses lease business equipment or take out a secured loan to purchase it).

Finally, in some states, if your lawsuit is against a contractor who has a current license, you may file the judgment with the state licensing board. If the contractor doesn’t pay off the judgment or post a bond, he faces losing his license.

You can collect your judgment for years. If the defendant is not working but likely to get a job in the not too distant future, be patient. Laws in many states allow a judgment to be collected for ten to 20 years from the date it is entered, and you can usually apply to have this period extended.
