Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

Sports Rehabilitation Modalities

Sports Rehabilitation Modalities

by

Peter Burton

Sports therapy is recognized for its ability to return natural movement to impaired joints and muscles that have suffered traumatic injuries. When most people think of sports therapy, they usually associate it with a series of exercise techniques that are designed to encourage that natural movement. While targeted exercising is a hallmark of sports therapy, there are also a series of pain relieving methods that assist in the healing and overall well being of the patient. These treatments, known as modalities, are defined as methods of applying heat, cold, electricity, and even sound to parts of the body. Each method is responsible for inducing a desired effect such as influencing circulation, decreasing pain, and reducing inflammation. Modalities are their most effective when used in conjunction with exercising, and are very rarely the only form of treatment after suffering from an injury.

As previously mentioned, modalities can influence the circulation in the body one way or another. When heat is applied, it results in an increase of local circulation about 1cm below the surface of the skin. For a more intensive heat treatment, ultrasound is the best option. The powerful, ultrafast sound waves are not only used in hospitals to view unborn babies; sports therapy harnesses the waves to produce deep heat with ultrafast vibration. Using a specialized machine, sound waves can penetrate 3cm beneath the skin. Using heat for stimulation helps to relax the muscles, increase stretchiness, and improve localized circulation around the impairment.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is cold application. Many people are familiar with the use of ice to manage pain after sporting events, so it should be no surprise that sports rehabilitation incorporates cold treatment. Known in physical therapy as cryotherapy, the main goals are to reduce both pain and circulation. Decreasing the circulation is a better option than applying heat to increase circulation when your objective is to decrease swelling. Cold application to swollen areas keeps fluid from building up during the inflammatory process.

Sports physical therapy also uses electrical stimulation modalities. As a powerful modality for pain reduction, sports therapy often provides several forms of electrical stimulation. Highly controlled electrical impulses are delivered to the skin surface through adhesive electrodes. The electrodes are manually applied to distinct locations designated for stimulation. These locations target specific nerve receptors in the skin that override the sensation of pain when introduced to the light electrical pulses. In addition to pain relief, those same electrical pulses can be used to produce muscle contractions. Sports physical therapy takes advantage of these contractions for muscle reeducation to help muscles regain strength and control after injury.

These modalities are an example of some of the non-exercise related methods used on patients in sports rehabilitation. There are numerous other pain relieving techniques, including acupuncture and massages, which keep the patient comfortable and confident in the treatment process.

Kent Hovind faces a 58-count federal indictment

Friday, July 21, 2006

Creationist Kent Hovind was arrested and plead not guilty in a Florida federal court to 58 charges of filing a frivolous lawsuits, false complaints, making threats against investigators and those cooperating with the investigation, and includes failing to pay $473,818 in employee-related taxes.

Last Thursday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Miles Davis heard the charges in which Kent Hovind professed not to understand why he is being prosecuted asserting “I still don’t understand what I’m being charged for and who is charging me.”

Legal and taxes issues are nothing new for Kent Hovind, who often calls himself “Dr. Dino.” He has been in legal trouble with the IRS for at least 17 years on his claims that he is employed by God, receives no income, has no expenses and owns no property.

Hovind’s attorney, Assistant Public Defender Kafahni Nkrumah, told U.S. Magistrate Judge Miles Davis that the Hovinds “did not want to enter a plea because he does not believe the United States, the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Attorney’s Office “have jurisdiction in this matter.”

When Davis said he would enter a plea for Hovind if he continued to refuse, Hovind said he was entering a not guilty plea “under duress.” In the exchange Davis asked Hovind “if he wrote and spoke English, this man who claims a doctorate said, ‘To some degree’.”

Jo Hovind, who is facing 44 charges stood with her husband’s hand on her shoulder and “reiterated the gist of his statements.”

U.S. District Judge Casey Rodgers will preside over the September 5th trial.

Davis made Hovind surrender his passport, guns, and will not allow him to leave the court’s juristition since they consider him a flight risk. On July 21, 2006 a missionary group in South Africa filed a petition to lift the travel restrictions. In part, Hovind claims the travel restrictions “violate the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.”

Hovind’s public defender Kafahni Nkrumah, states “Mr. Hovind contends that the conditions imposed upon him by Magistrate Davis impose a burden on the free exercise of defendant’s religion, in violation of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.”

No date to hear the appeal against the travel restrictions is scheduled.

A Dividend Trading Strategy To Maximise Your Contracts For D Ifference Trading

A Dividend Trading Strategy To Maximise Your Contracts For DIfference Trading

by

A Jessen

Imagine being able to leverage your current dividend trading strategy several times. For no more effort you can discover how simple it is dramatically increase your current returns. Uncover the truths behind Contracts For Difference Franking Credits and how to boost your current dividend strategy play. Contracts for Difference are remarkably easy to understand as they simply replicate the underlying share market so that any corporate actions on stocks happen to the CFD. Owning say 2000 HVN CFDs whilst the stock pays a 20 cent dividend means you will earn $400 on your Contracts for Difference account.

Payment dates for CFD Dividends The beauty of trading CFDs for dividends is that you do not have to wait until the payment date like the normal stock market. Most CFD providers credit your account on the day of the ex-div date or the very next day. Multiply your dividend by 3 times using leverage In order to multiply your returns you need to start leveraging your account and CFDs provide this advantage. Most stocks only require 10% initial margin. As a result of this leverage you can dramatically increase your trading returns. For example you might normally buy 1000 National Australia Bank shares and receive a $600 credit but with leverage you might buy 3000 NAB shares, which allows you to earn a dividend credit of $1,800. Its like putting a super charger onto your Share trading account. Many traders simply forget about the power behind trading share CFDs due to the increased leverage you get. Remember leverage is a double edged sword and words great when you are winning but not so great when you are losing. Always remember to keep your leverage small when starting out and you’ll find you stay within a safe risk management guideline. Many new traders tend to get greedy when it comes to leverage and contracts for difference and severly damage their account early one. There is nothing worse than starting off trading with a big win as your confidence gets to the point where you think this is all easy. Well in actual fact it isn’t that easy as you need to have sensible risk management in place at all times. This actual applies to any leveraged product and especially so with Contracts for Difference. Especially when implementing a CFD Dividing Trading strategy. Do CFDs pay franking credits? Unfortunately the CFD market doesn’t pay any franking credits. 100% fully franked dividends simply mean you wouldn’t pay tax on those earnings as the company has already paid the tax. Stock market investors need to own the stock for a full 45 days prior to the ex dividend date in order to receive the franking credits. Don’t let sub standard returns hold you back. Add a Dividend strategy to your CFD trading and watch the increase percentage returns. Step up and build it into your strategy today.

Stock markets worldwide rise on hopes of US economic recovery

Stock markets worldwide rise on hopes of US economic recovery

Friday, August 21, 2009

Stock indexes worldwide rose on Friday, after US bank chief Ben Bernanke said that the US economy was starting to recover from the recession.

Addressing a conference in Wyoming, the bank chief said that “the prospects for a return to growth in the near term appear good.”

He added, however, that “the economic recovery is likely to be relatively slow at first, with unemployment declining only gradually from high levels.”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 155.91 points, or 1.67%, to end the day at 9505.96. The Nasdaq reached 2020.90 points after gaining 1.59%. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index, meanwhile, struck a ten-month high, reaching a level of 1,026.13 at the closing bell, up 1.9%.

The British FTSE index rose about two percent, closing at 4,851. The French Cac index gained 3.1% and the German Dax 2.8%.

“Bernanke was a little bit more bullish than most people were expecting. He’s saying that the global economy is starting to emerge from the recession and that the fears of a financial collapse have receded substantially,” said Jacob Oubina, the currency strategist of Forex.com.

“I think the market is just taking those headlines as extreme positives for the outlook.”

Jean-Claude Trichet, the European Central Bank president, warned that talk of a complete recovery might be premature. “I am a little bit uneasy when I see that, because we have some green shoots here and there, we are already saying, ‘well, after all, we are close to back to normal,’ ” he said.

Alternative Energy Resources: Amazing Products And Technologies

By Michael Bustamante

Fossil fuels are getting more and more difficult to locate and exploit. Processing fuel fossils is also a highly pollutant process which brings tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Within this context, finding alternative energy resources is no longer a prospect but an immediate necessity. Numerous companies are involved in researching new, eco-friendly resources as well as the adequate machines to process them.

Biomass refers to any living or recently dead biological material that can be used as fuel. In relation to the concept of alternative energy resources, biomass may be representing either plant grown for the purpose of becoming biofuel or waste material of the agricultural activity. It is obvious that turning waste into fuel instead of landfills is the better alternative. But combusting biomass can be a very dirty process and therefore the concept of biomass gasification has come into play.

Biomass gasification is the proof that alternative energy resources can produce fuel which is non-pollutant. Biomass gasification is a process that converts the organic matter, biomass, into carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide. Biomass is gasified without combustion at high temperatures resulting in a new gas called syngas which is considered itself a fuel. Using biomass as a fuel to create a new fuel is considered one of the alternative energy resources.

People use electricity for almost everything in their life. No one can nowadays imagine life without electricity. Electricity powers all kinds of equipments. If new solutions could be developed to power these equipments without using so much electricity, they would decrease the use of traditionally produced electricity and thus the environmental impact of burning fossil fuels to produce electricity. A vapor absorption machine is an example of such a solution.

A vapor absorption machine uses heat sources to provide the energy needed to power a cooling system. Heat sources may include kerosene fueled flame, waste heat from factories, and so on. The principle is very simple and very smart considering that practically heat is wasted in almost any environment. Using heat to produce cooling is one of the great breakthroughs of modern technology. Solutions such as the vapor absorption machine may be considered themselves as alternative energy resources and the vapor absorption machine can, without a doubt, be utilized in almost every economical sector.

A way to stop polluting the earth is to use less pollutant materials. Agriculture is the foundation of the economy, feeding the world population. But agriculture depletes the earth of its resources and poisons it with chemical fertilizers. Whatever gets in the ground, gets in the water, and what gets in the water, gets into people’s bodies. The Herbagreen fertilizer is a new generation fertilizer which does not treat the soil but the leaves of the plants. Leaves are feeding the plants and that is why Herbagreen is so important. Instead of damaging soil with chemical fertilizers, Herbagreen uses tribomechanical activation, an advanced milling technology, to create particles small enough to penetrate the leaves of the plants. Herbagreen is developed strictly on minerals and its production and use have no damaging effects on the environment.

11-year-old California girl charged for throwing stone in defense

11-year-old California girl charged for throwing stone in defense

Monday, July 18, 2005

An 11-year-old girl faces serious assault charges in California after casting a stone at a group of boys who were throwing water balloons at her. In April, Maribel Cuevas was apprehended by Fresno, California police and spent five days in a detention center after throwing the object at the group of boys who bombarded her with water balloons as she walked down the sidewalk. A 9-year-old boy was hit with the stone, and suffered a wound to his head requiring medical assistance.

Since then, Cuevas has spent one month under house arrest pending court. Cuevas’ lawyer, Richard Beshwate, told the BBC that “They [Fresno police] are treating her like a violent parole offender. It’s not a felony, it’s an 11-year-old acting like an 11-year-old.”

Fresno Police Sergeant Anthony Martinez told reporters: “We responded. We determined a felony assault had taken place and the officers took the actions that were necessary.” Cuevas is due back in court next month on felony assault charges.

The girl was placed in juvenile hall during her five-day detention, with only one 30-minute visit from her parents. She was then placed under a 30 day house arrest and required to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet. The house arrest allowed the girl to attend school.

Maribel, who knows very little English, said that the boy initiated the conflict — the boy also admitted as much.

Paris SG to strengthen defence; signs Krychowiak and Meunier

Wednesday, July 6, 2016

On Sunday French capital football club Paris Saint Germain announced they signed two players — Polish defensive midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak from Spanish club Sevilla FC on a five-year term and Belgian defender Thomas Meunier from Club Brugge KV on a four year deal, under the management of Unai Emery.

Defensive midfielder Kychowiak spent two seasons with Sevilla with Unai Emery playing 90 matches and won two back-to-back UEFA Europa League titles. He has played 38 international matches and played in the UEFA Euro 2016 quarter-finals where his team lost to Portugal on penalties.

After signing the contract agreement, Krychowiak said, “I am very proud to return to France and defend the colours of a club as ambitious as Paris Saint-Germain[…] The opportunity to continue working with Unai Emery was obviously a major factor in my decision.” Kychowiak played for Stade de Reims before joining Sevilla.

24-year-old defender Thomas Meunier played five years at Club Brugge and won the Belgian Pro League this season and Belgian Cup in 2015. Meunier was trained as a forward. Making his international debut in 2013, Meunier played with the national team in UEFA Euro 2016.

Meunier said, “I feel I am ready for the next step after five beautiful years in Brugge. PSG is a team that is well-know all over the world and I am proud to be transferred to such a big team. I want to thank everyone in Brugge for my beautiful time here: the fans, the players, the staff and the board” ((fr))French language: ?Après cinq belles années passées à Bruges, je me sens prêt pour franchir une étape.

PSG previously signed French midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa.
