Significance Of University Campus Tour In Higher Education

Although a virtual university campus tour cannot simply replace the unprecedented benefits of having a physical interaction with a university or college, yet it can serve as a vital student recruitment tool, especially for international students who find it hard to manage time and resources to visit every campus before admission.

Owing to the rising popularity of the internet, an increasing number of prospective students are taking to the net to find out whether or not a university is worth applying to. A recent study conducted by Cappex showed that virtual tours are the most effective means to initially evaluate a university campus. In fact, 36 percent of the students said that they would “really like” to take a virtual tour of the campus whereas 30 percent called it a “must-have” feature of all university websites.

Although visiting a university campus in person is extremely beneficial yet the cost of travel prevents most of the students to limit their campus visits to just a few colleges. But for a student who is exploring close to 20 college websites, taking auniversity virtual tourcan help him shortlist only a few handful of colleges that he can physically visit. The cost of physical visits is indubitably higher for international students who are barely able to visit any college campus before making a final decision. Thus, virtual tours are especially advantageous for such students who can at least get a feel of the campus and see what it is like before getting enrolled.

Virtual tours are more like initial screening tests that are conducted by prospects before they begin with a more detailed investigation. Such tours can be conducted sitting in the comfort of your own home and can be repeated multiple times for students who seek a reminder about specific features. The virtual tours that are being created nowadays are often accentuated with information that further enhances the experience of the prospects and offers a deeper understanding of the place. These tours are the ideal way to lay focus on the best features of a university while demonstrating the essence of campus life.

If you are convinced, you must invest in creating a virtual university campus tour to attract more prospective students. Nowadays, a wide variety of video presentations, slideshows, and even PDFs have been labeled as virtual tours and floated into the market. It is important to understand that today’s youth is quite well-informed and thus, they will only be attracted by sophisticated, well-designed, informative and mobile-accessible virtual tours that give them a good sense of the place. After all, they will be spending their next two to four years of their lives on that campus. So, look for a reliable agency with considerable experience and talent to create a virtual tour.

HIV-positive man receives 35 years for spitting on Dallas police officer

Sunday, May 18, 2008

An HIV-positive man was sentenced to 35 years in prison Wednesday, one day after being convicted of harassment of a public servant for spitting into the eye and open mouth of a Dallas, Texas police officer in May 2006. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that no one has ever contracted HIV from saliva, and a gay-rights and AIDS advocacy group called the sentence excessive.

A Dallas County jury concluded that Willie Campbell’s act of spitting on policeman Dan Waller in 2006 constituted the use of his saliva as a deadly weapon. The incident occurred while Campbell, 42, was resisting arrest while being taken into custody for public intoxication.

“He turns and spits. He hits me in the eye and mouth. Then he told me he has AIDS. I immediately began looking for something to flush my eyes with,” said Waller to The Dallas Morning News.

Officer Waller responded after a bystander reported seeing an unconscious male lying outside a building. Dallas County prosecutors stated that Campbell attempted to fight paramedics and kicked the police officer who arrested him for public intoxication.

It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears.

Prosecutors said that Campbell yelled that he was innocent during the trial, and claimed a police officer was lying. Campbell’s lawyer Russell Heinrichs said that because he had a history of convictions including similarly attacking two other police officers, biting inmates, and other offenses, he was indicted under a habitual offender statute. The statute increased his minimum sentence to 25 years in prison. Because the jury ruled that Campbell’s saliva was used as a deadly weapon, he will not be eligible for parole until completing at least half his sentence.

If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.

The organization Lambda Legal (Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund), which advocates for individuals living with HIV, says that saliva should not be considered a deadly weapon. Bebe Anderson, the HIV projects director at Lambda Legal, spoke with The Dallas Morning News about the sentence. “It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears,” said Anderson.

The Dallas County prosecutor who handled the trial, Jenni Morse, said that the deadly weapon finding was justified. “No matter how minuscule, there is some risk. That means there is the possibility of causing serious bodily injury or death,” said Morse. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins stated: “If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.”

Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.

A page at the CDC’s website, HIV and Its Transmission, states: “HIV has been found in saliva and tears in very low quantities from some AIDS patients.” The subsection “Saliva, Tears, and Sweat” concludes that: “Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.” On Friday the Dallas County Health Department released a statement explaining that HIV is most commonly spread through sexual contact, sharing needles, or transfusion from an infected blood product.

Major explosions at UK oil depot

Major explosions at UK oil depot

Sunday, December 11, 2005

A series of large explosions have occurred close to Hemel Hempstead Hertfordshire, UK. The source of the explosions has been confirmed as the Hertfordshire Oil Storage Terminal (HOSL), Hemel Hempstead, known locally as the Buncefield complex. Up to 150 fire fighters are reported to be at the scene with 10 fire appliances and 1 specialist foamer.

The first ‘blast’ was heard near Hemel Hempstead on Sunday 11 Dec at 6 am. Further smaller explosions followed at 6:24am , 6:26am, 6:30am. BBC News 24 reported an additional, fourth large explosion. Hertfordshire Police Constabulary are currently treating the explosion as an accident.

Reports say the explosion, which registered 2.4 on the Richter scale, was heard as far away as Oxford, and Whitehall, Central London which is 60km (38 miles) away. Eyewitness statements report that the explosion was heard from at least 160km (100 miles) away and as far away as France and The Netherlands. Pilots reported noticing the blast from the North Sea and the West Country area of the UK. The M1 motorway which runs close by has been closed in both directions near the blast which is causing travel chaos as other roads become congested.

Malcom Stewart, a BBC News24 eyewitness who is a tanker driver for the site has reported that the site supplies several oil companies and is a joint operation between Total UK and Texaco, it is also used by BP, Shell and the British Pipeline association. The complex is not a refinery but a storage facility for refined petroleum awaiting distribution to airports and filling stations. The eyewitness reports that the depot has approximately 20 tanks which can hold about 3 million gallons (11 million litres or 70,000 barrels) each. Another News24 eyewitness has just reported that he has seen at least 5 of these tanks on fire.

The depot operates on a 24 hour basis and is split into 2 parts – aviation fuel and domestic fuel. A number of eyewitnesses have reported on UK news that the aviation fuel side appears to be the part of the site that has been affected.

Local authorities were not immediately available for comment but there have been reports of casualties.

Some reports on live television state that, “Several other neighbours said they did see a plane go into the depot.” BBC News 24 were also discussing the idea a possible plane crash as the cause of the explosions. Hertfordshire police have now gone on the record to say that there is no plane involved (BBC News24).

The police have issued a contact number 0800 096 0095 and asked that people do not call the emergency services in Hertfordshire directly unless it is an emergency.

In addition to being an oil storage depot, it is a major hub on the UK oil pipeline network with pipelines to Killingholme Lindsey Oil Refinery (LOR), Humberside (10 inch), Merseyside (10 and 12 inch), Coryton on the Thames Estuary (14 inch) and Heathrow (6 and 8 inch) and Gatwick airports radiating from it.

The disaster is believed to be the worst explosion at a petrochemical plant in the UK since the Flixborough disaster of 1974.Hertfordshire’s Chief Fire Officer Roy Wilsher said: “This is possibly the largest incident of its kind in peacetime Europe.”

A firefighting press officer said that they are stock piling foam from neighboring regions for a prolonged attach which they hope will stop the spread of the fire, however, the inferno itself will have to burn out which could take between 24 hours and a few days.

Despite the authorities saying that there is no need to panic buy petrol, filling stations have had above average queues since this morning and some small garages have ran out.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has visited the scene.

New Zealand airlines relax knife regulations

Saturday, October 1, 2005

New Zealand has relaxed the safety rules imposed on internal airlines in 2002, once more allowing passengers to carry pocket knives with blades less than 60mm long and knitting needles.

Other larger items remain banned, including ice-skates, pool cues, hockey sticks, skateboards, cricket bats and harpoons.

Other countries more at risk from terrorism such as the United States of America and Australia will maintain their stricter rules and continue to ban a range of small, sharp objects from their internal flights.

The airlines have also agreed to help return items seized from passengers before boarding.

Serious Relationship Advice For A Man Seeking Ultimate Fulfilment.}

Submitted by: Terry Ross

Men go for looks my boss for example goes for the tall, skinny, good looking blondes, while others rate a girl on her ass or the size of her boobs. For most men, personalities are secondary, something that only comes into question when a relationship gets more serious, after all you dont need a personality to have good sex!

Women on the other hand more often than not are looking for that nice, polite bloke, someone who is going to treat her right, show her some respect and consideration and someone who is going to sweep her off her feet.

Sure, the shallow guys get lots of girls, they are surrounded at the bar or in the night club and all the other guys just enviously look on. But in the cold light of day, when all the excitement wears off and everyone has come down to earth with a bump, how many of those guys have a meaningful relationship. Are they truly happy, any less lonely than the normal guy and do they really know how to treat a woman, or understand what they want out of life

And the real question is, are they what women really want and the answer is generally no.

Women are after that good looking guy, thats something we cant deny, but at the end of the day appearance and personality are more important and the guy that puts in that little extra effort to make him stand out from the crowd will be the one that wins through.

Sexual attraction isnt all about looks, you see some really good looking guys who can never keep a girl. Sure, they might get a lot of dates, never be without a gorgeous looking girl on their arm but the odd date isnt for keeps and without the charm and personality the relationships rarely last.

So why am I telling you all this? Just so that youll stop wishing you were someone else, stop moping around and thinking that youll never get the girl of your dreams, stop thinking those extra good looking guys have all the luck. Women rate men by attractive personality traits, how they are treated and how sexy the guy is. The average guy can attract the hottest women just through learning the right skills and applying a little effort.

If you continue to expect women to accept you as they find you without making any kind of effort then yes, youll stay on the scrap heap and still be wondering in ten years time how those guys really do it. But, if you are prepared to learn the secrets of how to seduce women, how you can become a sex magnet and attract any girl and if you are prepared to put in the effort then you can and will attract women like flies. It just a game and you just need to learn how to play it.

You cant change your looks, unless of course youre going to opt for plastic surgery, but you can change your appearance through what you wear, how you act, body posture, learning to communicate, alluding charm and showing a positive attitude!

Residents of Leeds, England neighbourhood plagued with crime ask council for help

Residents of Leeds, England neighbourhood plagued with crime ask council for help

Sunday, October 10, 2010

Residents of a Leeds, England neighbourhood have requested help from a council because their neighbourhood is plagued by crime, overcrowding, and community tensions.

Leeds City Council received a request for help from residents of Hyde Park, who said they were worried about the increasing level of anti-social behavior and worsening community relations. A report will be unveiled on Wednesday by a council delegation, highlighting the problems in the area. “The people living in Hyde Park come from widely different population groups… these groups have very different customs, needs and living styles and this can provoke high levels of tension in the area,” the delegation said.

The council claims that because of the 28 per cent ethnic minority population and the 40,000 students living in the neighbourhood, there are tensions between residents. They added, however, that they are actively encouraging people to work together, citing a multi-faith forum, a cricket competition and activities which bring old and young together.

The report says that the council are trying to build relationships between Muslims and police, something which they said is “particularly important after the area’s connection to the London bombings on 7th July 2005.” A local newspaper reported that “the Shebab project introduces young Muslims to role models from sport and culture and also runs scholars’ talks to counter extremist ideologies.”

Crime has increased by 7% in the past year in Hyde Park, and residents noted that anti-social behaviour was getting worse. The council said that an anti-burglary task force had helped to reduce the number of thefts from homes. Residents complained that there was a lack of pride in the area, and at the end of the academic year in the summer, large piles of rubbish were left in streets, yards and alleyways. The report adds that the council operates a recycling scheme aimed towards teenagers, and that rubbish collections have increased.

[We are] slightly frustrated with certain communication issues that we’ve had with the council

The Guardian reported on Wednesday that campaigners are attempting to “take control of a derelict school building and transform it into a community hub are appealing for sponsors and partners in a bid to turn their dreams into reality.” They say that the unused building, owned by the council, could be used for meetings and events. A volunteer group of residents have been working on a business plan, and have gained support from local businesses to create “a vision of an open, accessible and valuable resource for all.”

A member of the commitee, however, said he was “frustrated” with the council’s attitude towards the plans. “The RPCC is slightly frustrated with certain communication issues that we’ve had with the council, but we’re working with them and hoping to gain further assistance going forward,” he said. “It’s a shame that certain setbacks could have been avoided.”

The deputation added that “a major factor in Hyde Park’s suffering is its high level of population density”, which they conceded is something they are unable to change. The council responded to complaints that streets are “cheap and unhealthy takeaways, letting agents and boarded-up shop fronts,” by saying that Hyde Park Corner and Headingley are, according to the Yorkshire Post, “thriving shopping areas and work had taken place to ensure a good mix of outlets.”

The report concludes: “The council acknowledges that because of the very particular circumstances which exist in the neighbourhood, Hyde Park faces difficult challenges which affect the quality of life of residents and that ‘normal’ service levels may not be sufficient to tackle some of these. The council will do more to enable local people to influence how services work and how local problems are tackled. Local community and voluntary groups will be invited to play an active role.”

Accounting The Three Main Functions Of Accounting

By Uchenna Ani-Okoye

There are three main functional areas of accounting which need to be considered in modern day accountancy for any business. The three areas are, cost, finance and management accounting.

The first area, financial accounting, is used mainly for ascertaining the results of any such business on a periodic basis, for i.e. 6 months. This should as a result; help the company determine the future course of action, in the long term. From an economic perspective, financial accounting treats money as a factor of production.

Management and cost accounting are apparatus used to help management make decisions on a day to day basis. Management and cost accounting arent useful simply for their own sake. These two functions help management conduct themselves along with other vital factors involved in the running of a business. Other key factors could be supply, demand, competitors, availability of raw materials, logistics etc.

The second area is cost accounting, its primary purpose is to attain the value of direct and indirect costs involved in production. From the value acquired, management can make an informed decision on improvement in production performance. From an economic perspective, cost accounting is the measurement of economic performance. Thus, this information gives management a clearer indication of the performance of the product resources in the business.

Costing also helps the sales manage in setting the correct price. But, because costing is solely a measurement of economic performance, it can not be considered as an accurate basis for setting prices. This is because selling prices is more of an economic decision. It would not be wrong for me to mention that pricing is basically determined by market factors. Prices are influenced mainly by demand, supply and competition, less on costs. For i.e. high demanded plus lack of competition would result in the business charging higher prices for its product, well above the costs.

The third area is management accounting, which is related closely to cost accounting. Although it has essentially evolved from cost accounting, management accounting plays a much broader role in management decisions. It measures the performance, economically, of the whole business, vis–vis the economic environment that the business operates in. This area of accounting, seeks to combine both financial and cost information into a much broader function.

Lastly, management accounting, this area is instrumental in advising and assisting management in making vitally important business decisions. It essentially makes management more self aware of the economic implications and consequences of decisions made. From an economic perspective, it looks at the study of money as an economic resource, while at the same time, treating it as a measure of economic performance. This allows the management to measure it as an economic factor of production, for i.e. the rate of return on capital employment. You can find more information and resource links on accounting by visiting: http://www.insightempire.com/Accountingfordummies/

It is then seen that accounting plays a vital role in three distinct areas, which are equally as important. With the advent of computerised accounting, it has made it much easy for management to monitor the accounting information. Financial accounting software, allows you to make financial statements and various cost and MIS statements almost instantly with just one push of a button, the only laborious aspect of accounting is data entry. A financial manager must bring it upon himself or herself to make sure that meaningful data is input into the system. Proper categorisation must be done and all key based errors avoided, in order to ensure management is receiving accurate financial information.

Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.

Ariel Sharon’s brain shows activity

Ariel Sharon’s brain shows activity

Saturday, January 14, 2006

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon remains in a coma after 10 days.

Medical experts on the outside say that Sharon’s failure to regain consciousness does not look well for his recovery.

On Wednesday, doctors began reducing the level of sedatives with the intent of drawing Sharon out of an induced coma. Hospital officials say that Sharon remains “lightly sedated”, but are not sure when he will wake up once they stop giving him the sedatives.

New reports say an EEG has shown that Sharon has activity on both sides of his brain and doctors say that’s the most “promising” signs they have had since they started to bring him out of the coma. Doctors also say that activity in both lobes doesn’t indicate anything about the extent of the brain damage. “It is another piece of information that on its own means nothing,” said Dr. Gal Ifergan, a neurologist at Soroka Medical Center in Beer Sheva, who is not treating Sharon.

Although he has activity on both sides of his brain, Sharon could still have extensive brain damage, Ifergan said. He also said that it’s “very worrisome that he hasn’t woken from his coma”, yet.

There are 2 major types of stroke, and Sharon has had both. The first was a mild stroke Dec. 18 caused by a blood clot that lodged in an artery in the brain, cutting off blood flow and causing minor damage. The second occurred just one day before he was scheduled to undergo surgery to repair a hole in his heart. This one was a severe cerebral hemorrhage

“After nine days he has had very slow progress and that indicates more permanent injury to a level where his quality of life is affected,” Dr. Demetrius Lopes, a Rush University Medical Center neurosurgeon said. “And then decisions will have to be made,” he added.

Sharon’s condition is still critical but stable.

Choosing Bedroom Furniture: Comfort, Storage Or Style?

Choosing Bedroom Furniture: Comfort, Storage or Style?

by

Pete Nisbet

When people are choosing bedroom furniture, two of their main criteria are comfort and style – in that order. People generally associate bedrooms with comfort, and although storage is also very important from a practical point of view, it tends to play second fiddle to style. Ask anyone – \”should your bedroom be comfortable, stylish or an effective storeroom?\” and we all know what the answer will be.

Ask then to place these three in a particular order, and it will likely be as presented above. However, once they start using the bedroom, storage will likely be highest on their complaints list, even though that was the last on their minds when furnishing it. But not you, because you are more intelligent and discerning, and understand that of all the rooms in your home, the bedroom is where most of the storage is needed.

Teenagers are Different!

In saying that, a lot depends upon age and gender: young adult males will likely need lots of spare floor space for storage and very little else. Until they get a girl friend – and then it all changes to comfort and style with beautiful hi-fi units and fat-screen TV stands. But young men are a race apart as any parents know, so we shall restrict ourselves here to conventional bedroom furniture and ignore the principles of this paragraph.

So back to normality and leave the teenagers to their own devices – except the girls of course, because everybody knows that young teenage women have perfect taste and style. In furnishing a bedroom you have specific types of bedroom furniture: sleeping and storage.

Choosing Bedroom Furniture – The Bed

Among the former are traditional beds: single, twin, queen size and king size being the most popular sizes, and you can add to that bunk beds and sofa beds for casual visitors. It is not possible here to describe the beautiful styles of bed available, but mention must be made of the fabulous Spanish Bay design by Homelegance, with raised ash burl veneered panels and antique brass hardware. Beautiful carvings are featured on each piece, including the magnificent dark cherry-veneered headboards on the post bed.

This is a fabulous traditional European romance style, but if you prefer something different a black Broyhill \’Perspective\’ bed offers a stylish ultra-modern design with geometric silhouettes. You may prefer something lighter, such as the white painted woodwork of Paula Deen Home furniture. Or how about a traditional bed by Signature, such as their Wyatt king bed with a scrolled metal headboard and footboard.

When choosing the mattress, regard that as separate from the bed, and select a mattress that meets your personal needs, and those of your partner. That choice is beyond the scope of this article.

Storage in the Bedroom

These firms above are all well known American brands that offer the storage bedroom furniture to match the beds. As hinted above, storage is critical in a bedroom, and if you are the guy in your mixed relationship and ignore bedroom storage then you may be looking for another bed in the spare room! If you have no spare room, then join the dog!

An armoire or two is essential if you have no bedroom closet, and you will never have enough drawers. You may have had some foresight and included drawers with your bed, but you will still likely need a full chest of drawers and perhaps also a lingerie chest. Don\’t forget the dresser – that is essential for any woman and is something that most single men forget about. That will soon change (you hope!).

You will need a nightstand for each person for lamps, books, drinks and so on. Choose the height carefully, since it should be no lower than the height of the mattress – maybe two or three inches higher at most. Most beds, including those mentioned above, offer matching nightstands.

Women and Their Dressers

Dressers are best with mixed drawer sizes, and a lovely large clear glass mirror. Most women prefer to sit at their dresser rather than stand, so make sure it has a matching chair or stool. A matching ottoman would also be appropriate, offering further storage space beneath a lift-up seat. Although some now have drawers, you lose a lot of the storage space for large and bulky items by having drawers in your ottoman.

When choosing an armoire, make sure it is high enough to hold your coats and dresses without them touching the bottom. It should have space for suits, shirts, dresses, coats, ties and so on – in fact many purchase a \’hers\’ and a \’his\’. No prizes for guessing who needs the biggest! Make sure that at least one of these has a full-length mirror, unless you have one attached to your bedroom wall.

Choosing bedroom furniture is not difficult, but keep clear of the comfort, storage or style argument by taking comfort as a separate entity. Regard the bed as most important, but also take it that you will need lots of storage space. If you are a single guy it will all likely change eventually anyway.
