Tom Cruise debates psychiatry on NBC’s Today show

Saturday, June 25, 2005

In an interview on NBC’s Today show with Matt Lauer, Tom Cruise aggressively defended his opposition to psychiatry and anti-depressive drugs. This occurred after being asked questions about his criticism of Brooke Shields, who has been taking drugs, including Paxil, for postpartum depression. Cruise is usually known for keeping his cool in interviews, but recently he has been slightly more unbound.

Cruise’s statements, including “Psychiatry is a pseudoscience“, and “There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance in a body”, reflect the beliefs of the Church of Scientology, of which he is a member. The interview became particularly tense when Lauer mentioned that he knew people who had been helped by taking Ritalin, an attention-deficit disorder drug.

“Matt, Matt, you don’t even — you’re glib,” Cruise responded. “You don’t even know what Ritalin is. If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, OK. That’s what I’ve done.”

Cruise went on to say: “You don’t know the history of psychiatry, I do.”

Cruise has not formally studied medicine beyond a high school education, having dropped out in his senior year (1980) to pursue an acting career. In light of this, some members of the psychiatric community have refuted Cruise’s controversial statements. Dr. John Scully, medical director of the American Psychiatric Association, has said “The illnesses we treat – anxiety, depression – are very real illnesses…The treatments work. We have demonstrated that through robust scientific study.”

Lauer insisted that Ritalin helped people: “You’re telling me what’s worked for people I know or hasn’t worked for people I know. I’m telling you, I’ve lived with these people and they’re better,” Lauer said.

Cruise hinted that Lauer was promoting Ritalin and Lauer scoffed: “I am not. I’m telling you in their cases, in their individual case, it worked.”

The exchange ended when the two basically agreed to disagree. Cruise, who is 42, did admit that one of his goals is to speak more about Scientology in an effort to get people to understand it better.

Scientology has historically been at odds with the established medical and mental health community. The rift dates back to the 1950s and Scientology’s founding father L. Ron Hubbard. In his book, “Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health”, published in 1950, Hubbard claims that Dianetics (later called Scientology) could cure the majority of human ailments. These claims were sharply disputed by a variety of mainstream science and medical professionals including psychiatrists.

On Monday, June 27, 2005, the American Psychiatric Association released a statement that stated the following:”It is irresponsible for Mr. Cruise to use his movie publicity tour to promote his own ideological views and deter people with mental illness from getting the care they need…Rigorous, published, peer-reviewed research clearly demonstrates that treatment (of mental illness) works…It is unfortunate that in the face of this remarkable scientific and clinical progress that a small number of individuals and groups persist in questioning its legitimacy.”

The APA represents nearly 36,000 physicians specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.

She received her Bachelor of Music from Oberlin College Conservatory and Master of Music from New England Conservatory.

RG: Thank you for taking time out of your intense schedule. I’d love to start with you telling me about your favorite role?

DM: That’s a great question…I haven’t ever gotten to play the roles I thought I would play. I’ve played the roles that were available and that were in my voice part, I’ve enjoyed them all. The role I remember best is Phyllis in Iolanthe, because the character fit my personality, the part fit my voice, and all of my friends were in it with me, and my sister was in it, which made the entire experience fun. The biggest singing lesson I have learned, is you have to keep your mind open; it’s not what you’d expect. When an opera comes up, and someone is doing it, you may never have heard of it, you may never have imagined what you would do. You do it.

RG: How much time do you recommend a serious voice student practice vocal warm-ups?

DM: That’s a tough one, because you don’t want to practice too much, in order to avoid wear and tear on your voice. A pianist will practice four to eight hours a day. A singer can’t do that. I would spend a few hours every day, not just singing vocal warm-ups and singing exercises, but learning music, plunking out notes. Sing twenty-five minutes, take a break, stay in the practice room, stay on the music, rest the voice, and then go back and practice in full voice again… Talking is the biggest issue. You have to be really cognizant of how you’re using your speaking voice. Speak high and off the chords or you’re in trouble.

RG: What would you consider the best way to practice?

DM: If you have a limited amount of time, even a few sighs up in the head, getting your palate up, that’s something you don’t do when you’re talking, do breathing exercises, several vocal warm-ups to get your throat open and get into singing mode. Yawn in the back, put the voice in the right place in your mouth, lift the palate and sing from the diaphragm. If you don’t do these to things, you can’t sing classical music, because there’s no way the sound is going to resonate.

RG: What are you vocal health secrets?

DM: Water, vitamin c, slippery elm, echinacea and goldenseal. Old time opera greats would swear by a shot [of liquor, brandy, cognac], that it would open up the voice; maybe it helped them not get nervous.

RG: Yes, but the problem with drinking alcohol is you lose sensation and can accidentally hurt yourself, because you don’t feel everything that’s going on.

DM: That’s the thing. If you’re in an intense situation when you’ve lost your voice, they give you cortisone, but you’re in danger of permanent damage and you can’t feel what you’re doing.

RG: What is your understanding about how to breathe when you sing?

DM: I took many singing lessons in my life with many a vocal coach. It took me a long, long time to figure that out. I always knew how to take a good breath, but managing it, parceling it out, so you’ve got enough so you’re not expending it all was the challenge. The Singingbelt is great because it gets you into the consciousness – there it is, you can’t ignore it. I didn’t understand before – I’d take these great breaths, and then I’d not have breath control, I’d let it go. Knowing how to manage the breath from the beginning of the phrase to the end is key.

RG: As you understand it, what is the correct position of the jaw?

DM: Relaxed, lowered, not sticking out or jutting forward. The biggest vowel modification is to make the mouth vertical and not horizontal, you can’t jut you chin out, if you’re truly dropping the jaw.

RG: What is the correct mouth position?

DM: I literally spread my fingers and put the hard part of my palms in the hollow of my cheeks. I guess I could get more technical, but the more you think about it that way, the easier it is. The hardest thing is to get people to open their mouths. Using a mirror helps.

RG: What about the tongue?

DM: Down behind the teeth, and scooped.

RG: Can you describe anything you’ve learned from a teacher that really improved your singing? e.g. how you support your voice, placement, position?

DM: You have to think “ah” all the time. There is an “ah” written over every page of my music when I look at my notes – it says, “think ah,” “think ah.”

RG: Any recommended reading for singing?

DM: Richard Miller, The Structure of Singing. When I was at Oberlin, this book was highly recommended for technique. Also, A Soprano on Her Head by Eloise Ristad, which is a more creative and holistic look at performing.

Colbert officially withdraws Presidential bid; Obama supporters pressured South Carolina

Tuesday, November 6, 2007

Two prominent South Carolina supporters of Barack Obama pressured the state Democratic council to keep Stephen Colbert off the primary ballot. The Council voted 13-3 last week against Colbert’s placement on the ballot.

According to an anonymous member of the council who felt pressured, one of those people was State Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum, who admitted she had made the calls. “I think lobbying was too strong a word,” she said in an interview with CNN. “I called them to see what they were thinking, and if they had made up their mind. I am a volunteer in that campaign, and so I am not a staffer. And I thought it could have taken votes away from a lot of people.”

Another Obama supporter, state Representative Bakari Sellers, also admitted to making the calls. “I placed the calls as a concerned Democrat, realizing that we are a country in despair,” Sellers told CNN. “It is not a time for games or to make a mockery of the process.”

Yesterday Colbert officially withdrew from the race. “I am shocked and saddened by the South Carolina Democratic Executive Council’s 13-to-3 vote to keep me off their presidential primary ballot,” he said in the statement. “Although I lost by the slimmest margin in presidential election history — only 10 votes — I have chosen not to put the country through another agonizing Supreme Court battle. It is time for this nation to heal.”

According to Tenenbaum, the reason she did not want Colbert on the ballot was financial and not political. For every name the Democrats put on the ballot in South Carolina, they have to pay US$20,000 to the state election commission.

The Obama campaign denied any connection to the phone calls.

In related news, at a book signing at Borders Book Store in New York City last night, a protester posing as a member of the press disrupted the event, demanding Colbert make statements about 7 World Trade Center. Despite preliminary findings by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Institute of Standards and Technology that fire caused them, some conspiracy theorists believe the dramatic building collapses on September 11, including that of building seven, were the result of controlled demolition. NIST has “found no evidence of a blast or controlled demolition event”, though in its final report on building 7, they would “like to determine the magnitude of hypothetical blast scenarios that could have led to the structural failure of one or more critical elements.”

“What about World Trade Center Number 7, Stephen?” shouted the protester. “What are you going to say about that? Why don’t you give us a witty remark and make a joke about it? Keep smirking, Stephen!” The protester was removed by the book store’s security.

Kentucky lawmaker in critical condition after fight in high school cafeteria

Saturday, April 16, 2011

One of Kentucky’s newest state lawmakers, who also serves as a high school teacher, sustained a critical head injury Tuesday morning while intervening to break up a fight between two students in the school’s cafeteria.

State Representative DeWayne Bunch (R), 49, was listed in “extremely critical” condition when he was taken to the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin, Kentucky, immediately following the fight between two male teens.

Bunch was reported as being unconscious and bleeding from the ears when emergency responders arrived at Whitley County High School.

The fight, between a fifteen- and sixteen-year-old, was caught by a surveillance camera which showed Bunch being punched by the sixteen-year-old, according to the sheriff. It is not clear what started the fight, which took place in the school’s cafeteria during breakfast.

The teens have been charged with one count of first-degree assault and two counts of third-degree assault. They are both in custody at a juvenile detention center according to the sheriff.

Bunch was later transported to University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. His family has requested no information be publicly released about his condition.

Significance Of University Campus Tour In Higher Education

Although a virtual university campus tour cannot simply replace the unprecedented benefits of having a physical interaction with a university or college, yet it can serve as a vital student recruitment tool, especially for international students who find it hard to manage time and resources to visit every campus before admission.

Owing to the rising popularity of the internet, an increasing number of prospective students are taking to the net to find out whether or not a university is worth applying to. A recent study conducted by Cappex showed that virtual tours are the most effective means to initially evaluate a university campus. In fact, 36 percent of the students said that they would “really like” to take a virtual tour of the campus whereas 30 percent called it a “must-have” feature of all university websites.

Although visiting a university campus in person is extremely beneficial yet the cost of travel prevents most of the students to limit their campus visits to just a few colleges. But for a student who is exploring close to 20 college websites, taking auniversity virtual tourcan help him shortlist only a few handful of colleges that he can physically visit. The cost of physical visits is indubitably higher for international students who are barely able to visit any college campus before making a final decision. Thus, virtual tours are especially advantageous for such students who can at least get a feel of the campus and see what it is like before getting enrolled.

Virtual tours are more like initial screening tests that are conducted by prospects before they begin with a more detailed investigation. Such tours can be conducted sitting in the comfort of your own home and can be repeated multiple times for students who seek a reminder about specific features. The virtual tours that are being created nowadays are often accentuated with information that further enhances the experience of the prospects and offers a deeper understanding of the place. These tours are the ideal way to lay focus on the best features of a university while demonstrating the essence of campus life.

If you are convinced, you must invest in creating a virtual university campus tour to attract more prospective students. Nowadays, a wide variety of video presentations, slideshows, and even PDFs have been labeled as virtual tours and floated into the market. It is important to understand that today’s youth is quite well-informed and thus, they will only be attracted by sophisticated, well-designed, informative and mobile-accessible virtual tours that give them a good sense of the place. After all, they will be spending their next two to four years of their lives on that campus. So, look for a reliable agency with considerable experience and talent to create a virtual tour.

HIV-positive man receives 35 years for spitting on Dallas police officer

HIV-positive man receives 35 years for spitting on Dallas police officer

Sunday, May 18, 2008

An HIV-positive man was sentenced to 35 years in prison Wednesday, one day after being convicted of harassment of a public servant for spitting into the eye and open mouth of a Dallas, Texas police officer in May 2006. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that no one has ever contracted HIV from saliva, and a gay-rights and AIDS advocacy group called the sentence excessive.

A Dallas County jury concluded that Willie Campbell’s act of spitting on policeman Dan Waller in 2006 constituted the use of his saliva as a deadly weapon. The incident occurred while Campbell, 42, was resisting arrest while being taken into custody for public intoxication.

“He turns and spits. He hits me in the eye and mouth. Then he told me he has AIDS. I immediately began looking for something to flush my eyes with,” said Waller to The Dallas Morning News.

Officer Waller responded after a bystander reported seeing an unconscious male lying outside a building. Dallas County prosecutors stated that Campbell attempted to fight paramedics and kicked the police officer who arrested him for public intoxication.

It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears.

Prosecutors said that Campbell yelled that he was innocent during the trial, and claimed a police officer was lying. Campbell’s lawyer Russell Heinrichs said that because he had a history of convictions including similarly attacking two other police officers, biting inmates, and other offenses, he was indicted under a habitual offender statute. The statute increased his minimum sentence to 25 years in prison. Because the jury ruled that Campbell’s saliva was used as a deadly weapon, he will not be eligible for parole until completing at least half his sentence.

If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.

The organization Lambda Legal (Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund), which advocates for individuals living with HIV, says that saliva should not be considered a deadly weapon. Bebe Anderson, the HIV projects director at Lambda Legal, spoke with The Dallas Morning News about the sentence. “It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears,” said Anderson.

The Dallas County prosecutor who handled the trial, Jenni Morse, said that the deadly weapon finding was justified. “No matter how minuscule, there is some risk. That means there is the possibility of causing serious bodily injury or death,” said Morse. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins stated: “If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.”

Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.

A page at the CDC’s website, HIV and Its Transmission, states: “HIV has been found in saliva and tears in very low quantities from some AIDS patients.” The subsection “Saliva, Tears, and Sweat” concludes that: “Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.” On Friday the Dallas County Health Department released a statement explaining that HIV is most commonly spread through sexual contact, sharing needles, or transfusion from an infected blood product.

Major explosions at UK oil depot

Major explosions at UK oil depot

Sunday, December 11, 2005

A series of large explosions have occurred close to Hemel Hempstead Hertfordshire, UK. The source of the explosions has been confirmed as the Hertfordshire Oil Storage Terminal (HOSL), Hemel Hempstead, known locally as the Buncefield complex. Up to 150 fire fighters are reported to be at the scene with 10 fire appliances and 1 specialist foamer.

The first ‘blast’ was heard near Hemel Hempstead on Sunday 11 Dec at 6 am. Further smaller explosions followed at 6:24am , 6:26am, 6:30am. BBC News 24 reported an additional, fourth large explosion. Hertfordshire Police Constabulary are currently treating the explosion as an accident.

Reports say the explosion, which registered 2.4 on the Richter scale, was heard as far away as Oxford, and Whitehall, Central London which is 60km (38 miles) away. Eyewitness statements report that the explosion was heard from at least 160km (100 miles) away and as far away as France and The Netherlands. Pilots reported noticing the blast from the North Sea and the West Country area of the UK. The M1 motorway which runs close by has been closed in both directions near the blast which is causing travel chaos as other roads become congested.

Malcom Stewart, a BBC News24 eyewitness who is a tanker driver for the site has reported that the site supplies several oil companies and is a joint operation between Total UK and Texaco, it is also used by BP, Shell and the British Pipeline association. The complex is not a refinery but a storage facility for refined petroleum awaiting distribution to airports and filling stations. The eyewitness reports that the depot has approximately 20 tanks which can hold about 3 million gallons (11 million litres or 70,000 barrels) each. Another News24 eyewitness has just reported that he has seen at least 5 of these tanks on fire.

The depot operates on a 24 hour basis and is split into 2 parts – aviation fuel and domestic fuel. A number of eyewitnesses have reported on UK news that the aviation fuel side appears to be the part of the site that has been affected.

Local authorities were not immediately available for comment but there have been reports of casualties.

Some reports on live television state that, “Several other neighbours said they did see a plane go into the depot.” BBC News 24 were also discussing the idea a possible plane crash as the cause of the explosions. Hertfordshire police have now gone on the record to say that there is no plane involved (BBC News24).

The police have issued a contact number 0800 096 0095 and asked that people do not call the emergency services in Hertfordshire directly unless it is an emergency.

In addition to being an oil storage depot, it is a major hub on the UK oil pipeline network with pipelines to Killingholme Lindsey Oil Refinery (LOR), Humberside (10 inch), Merseyside (10 and 12 inch), Coryton on the Thames Estuary (14 inch) and Heathrow (6 and 8 inch) and Gatwick airports radiating from it.

The disaster is believed to be the worst explosion at a petrochemical plant in the UK since the Flixborough disaster of 1974.Hertfordshire’s Chief Fire Officer Roy Wilsher said: “This is possibly the largest incident of its kind in peacetime Europe.”

A firefighting press officer said that they are stock piling foam from neighboring regions for a prolonged attach which they hope will stop the spread of the fire, however, the inferno itself will have to burn out which could take between 24 hours and a few days.

Despite the authorities saying that there is no need to panic buy petrol, filling stations have had above average queues since this morning and some small garages have ran out.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has visited the scene.

New Zealand airlines relax knife regulations

Saturday, October 1, 2005

New Zealand has relaxed the safety rules imposed on internal airlines in 2002, once more allowing passengers to carry pocket knives with blades less than 60mm long and knitting needles.

Other larger items remain banned, including ice-skates, pool cues, hockey sticks, skateboards, cricket bats and harpoons.

Other countries more at risk from terrorism such as the United States of America and Australia will maintain their stricter rules and continue to ban a range of small, sharp objects from their internal flights.

The airlines have also agreed to help return items seized from passengers before boarding.

Serious Relationship Advice For A Man Seeking Ultimate Fulfilment.}

Submitted by: Terry Ross

Men go for looks my boss for example goes for the tall, skinny, good looking blondes, while others rate a girl on her ass or the size of her boobs. For most men, personalities are secondary, something that only comes into question when a relationship gets more serious, after all you dont need a personality to have good sex!

Women on the other hand more often than not are looking for that nice, polite bloke, someone who is going to treat her right, show her some respect and consideration and someone who is going to sweep her off her feet.

Sure, the shallow guys get lots of girls, they are surrounded at the bar or in the night club and all the other guys just enviously look on. But in the cold light of day, when all the excitement wears off and everyone has come down to earth with a bump, how many of those guys have a meaningful relationship. Are they truly happy, any less lonely than the normal guy and do they really know how to treat a woman, or understand what they want out of life

And the real question is, are they what women really want and the answer is generally no.

Women are after that good looking guy, thats something we cant deny, but at the end of the day appearance and personality are more important and the guy that puts in that little extra effort to make him stand out from the crowd will be the one that wins through.

Sexual attraction isnt all about looks, you see some really good looking guys who can never keep a girl. Sure, they might get a lot of dates, never be without a gorgeous looking girl on their arm but the odd date isnt for keeps and without the charm and personality the relationships rarely last.

So why am I telling you all this? Just so that youll stop wishing you were someone else, stop moping around and thinking that youll never get the girl of your dreams, stop thinking those extra good looking guys have all the luck. Women rate men by attractive personality traits, how they are treated and how sexy the guy is. The average guy can attract the hottest women just through learning the right skills and applying a little effort.

If you continue to expect women to accept you as they find you without making any kind of effort then yes, youll stay on the scrap heap and still be wondering in ten years time how those guys really do it. But, if you are prepared to learn the secrets of how to seduce women, how you can become a sex magnet and attract any girl and if you are prepared to put in the effort then you can and will attract women like flies. It just a game and you just need to learn how to play it.

You cant change your looks, unless of course youre going to opt for plastic surgery, but you can change your appearance through what you wear, how you act, body posture, learning to communicate, alluding charm and showing a positive attitude!

Residents of Leeds, England neighbourhood plagued with crime ask council for help

Residents of Leeds, England neighbourhood plagued with crime ask council for help

Sunday, October 10, 2010

Residents of a Leeds, England neighbourhood have requested help from a council because their neighbourhood is plagued by crime, overcrowding, and community tensions.

Leeds City Council received a request for help from residents of Hyde Park, who said they were worried about the increasing level of anti-social behavior and worsening community relations. A report will be unveiled on Wednesday by a council delegation, highlighting the problems in the area. “The people living in Hyde Park come from widely different population groups… these groups have very different customs, needs and living styles and this can provoke high levels of tension in the area,” the delegation said.

The council claims that because of the 28 per cent ethnic minority population and the 40,000 students living in the neighbourhood, there are tensions between residents. They added, however, that they are actively encouraging people to work together, citing a multi-faith forum, a cricket competition and activities which bring old and young together.

The report says that the council are trying to build relationships between Muslims and police, something which they said is “particularly important after the area’s connection to the London bombings on 7th July 2005.” A local newspaper reported that “the Shebab project introduces young Muslims to role models from sport and culture and also runs scholars’ talks to counter extremist ideologies.”

Crime has increased by 7% in the past year in Hyde Park, and residents noted that anti-social behaviour was getting worse. The council said that an anti-burglary task force had helped to reduce the number of thefts from homes. Residents complained that there was a lack of pride in the area, and at the end of the academic year in the summer, large piles of rubbish were left in streets, yards and alleyways. The report adds that the council operates a recycling scheme aimed towards teenagers, and that rubbish collections have increased.

[We are] slightly frustrated with certain communication issues that we’ve had with the council

The Guardian reported on Wednesday that campaigners are attempting to “take control of a derelict school building and transform it into a community hub are appealing for sponsors and partners in a bid to turn their dreams into reality.” They say that the unused building, owned by the council, could be used for meetings and events. A volunteer group of residents have been working on a business plan, and have gained support from local businesses to create “a vision of an open, accessible and valuable resource for all.”

A member of the commitee, however, said he was “frustrated” with the council’s attitude towards the plans. “The RPCC is slightly frustrated with certain communication issues that we’ve had with the council, but we’re working with them and hoping to gain further assistance going forward,” he said. “It’s a shame that certain setbacks could have been avoided.”

The deputation added that “a major factor in Hyde Park’s suffering is its high level of population density”, which they conceded is something they are unable to change. The council responded to complaints that streets are “cheap and unhealthy takeaways, letting agents and boarded-up shop fronts,” by saying that Hyde Park Corner and Headingley are, according to the Yorkshire Post, “thriving shopping areas and work had taken place to ensure a good mix of outlets.”

The report concludes: “The council acknowledges that because of the very particular circumstances which exist in the neighbourhood, Hyde Park faces difficult challenges which affect the quality of life of residents and that ‘normal’ service levels may not be sufficient to tackle some of these. The council will do more to enable local people to influence how services work and how local problems are tackled. Local community and voluntary groups will be invited to play an active role.”
