Businesses and individuals worldwide to turn lights off as part of Earth Hour 2009

Friday, March 27, 2009

Earth Hour 2009 takes place Saturday, March 28, 2009 between 8:30 to 9:30 pm local time when communities will participate by turning out their lights starting in New Zealand and progressing along time zones around the world.

Earth Hour began as a symbolic initiative against global warming by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). “[It is] The largest demonstration of public concern about climate change ever attempted.” Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General said.

Earth Hour began in 2007 with around 2 million participating, and increased to about 50 million in 2008. The Empire State Building, Las Vegas Strip, the Eiffel Tower, Petronas Twin Towers, the Peace Tower, the Parliament Buildings, the Christ the Redeemer statue, Acropolis of Athens, the Egyptian pyramids, and the Colosseum are some notable landmarks which will honour Earth Hour Saturday evening.

WWF organisers wished 1,000 cities would enlist in Earth Hour, however this was surpassed as this year over 2,400 have signed up to take part.

“The Government of Canada’s continued participation in Earth Hour is an indication of our commitment to being mindful consumers. As the custodian of one of the largest office building portfolios in the country, Public Works and Government Services Canada is committed to incorporating environmental practices into waste management, water conservation and the efficient use of energy in our buildings.” Christian Paradis, Minister of Public Works and Government Service said.

“Supporting Earth Hour is part of our commitment to help create a healthier environment for Canadians. Simple actions such as turning off the lights can help improve our environment and tackle climate change as well as empower Canadians to make important lifestyle changes that benefit their families and their environment. We encourage Canadians to take part in Earth Hour.” Jim Prentice, Minister of the Environment.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Eliminate Those Love Handles With A Non Surgical Procedure

byadmin

Are you tired of excessive exercising and dieting plans? Do you eat all the right foods and still cannot get rid of that stubborn fat. You work very hard to look good. You are 15 pounds away from your goal weight or you are already at your ideal weight, but you still have that bulge or bump in an unsightly area. No matter what you try it just does not want to go away. Perhaps, it is time to seek the assistance of a specialist that can provide you with a new method of eliminating those love handles and there is no surgery involved. Of course there are things to consider before having a medical treatment done to your body whether it is surgical or not. First, you want to consult with your physician about the treatment you want done and find out all the information you can about it. Your doctor will also recommend that you have a specialist perform the procedure. Coolsculpting in Brooklyn is a service that is offered by a reputable medical salon that has experts who can assist you in getting rid of those stubborn bulges.

New Procedure To Rid Fat Provided By A Professional Medical Spa

The next step is setting up an appointment with a professional medical salon to have the method done. When you talk with a specialist at a medical spa they will discuss with you how the procedure works and give you peace of mind in knowing that no surgery, needles, vitamin or diet pills are required. Furthermore, they will explain that Coolsculpting is a non-invasive and top-of- the line treatment that shapes to your body by freezing stubborn fat tissue and in time your body will naturally eliminate the fat. An expert also will let you know that this treatment is approved by the FDA. A specialist will position the device on the targeted area of your body that you want the fat removed from, and it will pull up the area in between the 2 cooling panels. Depending on your precise needs and situation will vary on how long the session will take, but in most cases it is done within an hour.

Reasons Why People Choose This Kind Of Treatment

After your first session you will notice a difference, but this kind of treatment normally will take 2 months before you can see the full effect. Mostly, because your body can take a long time to naturally remove the cells. No more covering your body with baggy clothing to hide those bulges. This treatment will have you feeling better about yourself, give you your self-esteem back and you will have the body you once did before.

Illinois high schools now required to buy insurance for athletes

Tuesday, August 6, 2013

This past Sunday, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed into law a bill known as “Rocky’s Law” that requires Illinois high schools, through the local school district, to buy catastrophic injury insurance up to US$3 million or medical costs for up to five years, whichever one comes first, that covers student athletes. The insurance must cover student athletes while they are competing.

The legislation was named after Rasul “Rocky” Clark. In 2000, the Eisenhower High School football player became paralyzed from the waist down as a result of a tackle during a game. His school based health insurance covered the costs of his medical treatment. A legislator sponsoring the bill noted that the need for this type of insurance is rare. Clark’s mother attended the legislation signing. Her son died last year.

Before parents can claim money from school insurance, they first must pay out US$50,000. Schools have until January 1, 2014 to comply with the law. Schools cannot charge students more than US$5 to defray the cost of insurance. If a school district already requires student to be covered through private health insurance, they are exempted from this law.

New Zealand pilot selling uniform online

Tuesday, August 15, 2006

“Jeremy”, an airplane pilot in Nelson, has put his uniform on sale for NZ$1.00 at New Zealand auction site TradeMe. The pilot had lost his job when Origin Pacific Airways fired 230 staff because of financial difficulties and is now trying to “make ends meet this week,” the pilot said. The auction has already reached 31 bids and reached $101 as of 7.30 a.m. August 15.

‘Jeremy’, the pilot, said on the auction page, that he is offering “a rare piece of Kiwi aviation history,”.

“This is an authentic Origin Pacific Jetstream pilot’s uniform lovingly drycleaned for one last time before its unfortunate retirement. It’s travelled many stormy nights and many sunrises and has seen almost 50,000 Kiwis safely to their destinations from Invercargill to the Far North. It has 778,000km on it, yet it looks as crisp today as it did when it was born,” the pilot described on TradeMe.

One bidder had offered $40 if he sold the uniform immediately but that offer was turned down in order to see the auction go until Sunday.

David Collier, Origin Pacific passenger services general manager, said “The uniform was Origin Pacific’s property and the pilot should not be selling it, but I think it’s probably one of those things you’d have to grin at and move on.”

Jay, Waitakere, asked on the auction page if the uniform came with a plane. The pilot replied “No, but if you want to start an airline I know where you can find a great bunch of people.”

The auction is closing on August 20, Sunday.

Reasons Why A Fit And Healthy Body Is Important

By Marilyn Fay Morrison

As the years go by, the subject of health and fitness has become increasingly prominent among many people. Thus the proliferation of businesses and establishments that cater to one’s fitness and well-being such as gyms and workout centers. Men just love to build their muscles while the ladies certainly love to maintain their slim figure. It is a well known fact that a huge majority of us wants a body that would be considered attractive to others, a body that you could be proud of. Building a fit and healthy body takes a lot of time, dedication, discipline, a strong mind and hard work. You can’t just say that you’ll be hitting the gym tomorrow and expect it to go smoothly from there. It is not as simple as that. You need to have a strong resolve and you need to adhere to it before you can expect success.

While the popularity of health and fitness programs and establishments are soaring through the roof, it seems that a good number of health and fitness practitioners don’t realize the true importance of a fit and healthy body. To be healthy and fit have a significant impact in your body more than you think. It improves the overall quality and longevity of your life. And since it also boosts your immune system, you become more resistant to diseases and ailments ranging from common colds to cancer.

But it is not merely with the physical aspect that a healthy and fit body can influence. It also promotes a healthy mind. So what does this mean? It means that you should be able to deal with stress more effectively. Your mind will be able to recuperate faster as compared to those who does not keep their body in shape. In other words, someone with a healthy and fit body is less likely to fall into depression. Aside from that, it also improves one’s mental image. Meaning you will have more confidence in yourself. You’ll just find that the social aspect of your life is improving. With a healthy body, your general perception in life is better.

So it is a no-brainer that you should always keep our body healthy and fit. Sure it is not exactly what you will call easy, but with such benefits that it can yield, it is all worth it. The most important thing you need to keep in mind if you engage in a fitness routine, is that you need to participate in a program that you actually enjoy. This will improve your success rate quite significantly. Because it is important that there is the element of fun or else you will just end up bored and unmotivated. We only get to live once, so keep your body healthy and fit and have a good quality life.

Fourth U.S. state governor orders net neutrality in government contracts

Fourth U.S. state governor orders net neutrality in government contracts

Sunday, February 18, 2018

On Thursday, Phil Scott of Vermont became the fourth governor in the United States to sign an executive order requiring all companies providing Internet access to state agencies to abide by net neutrality for all customers in his state. He said he did this because Vermonters rely on Internet access without blocking, throttling and paid prioritization, threatened by the December 14 decision of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the matter of “Restoring Internet freedom”. The first state governor to challenge the FCC in this way was Steve Bulllock of Montana, who did so on January 22. Andrew Cuomo of New York followed two days later. Philip Murphy of New Jersey signed a similar executive order on February 5. These four executive orders differ in details, but all require that state agencies purchase Internet access services only from companies with an enforceable commitment to net neutrality for all customers in their state.

This is part of a flurry of state-level net neutrality actions. The New York State Assembly introduced bill A01958 on January 17, 2017, three days before the inauguration of Donald Trump as President of the United States, anticipating action by him to overturn the 2015 “Title II Order” that made net neutrality enforceable in the US. Two other bills were introduced into the Washington House of Representatives in the ten days before the official decision of Trump’s FCC on this issue. In addition to these, 63 other state-level responses by net neutrality supporters were documented by Fight for the Future (FFTF) by February 16, 2018, including at least 27 bills introduced into the legislatures of 17 states with others reportedly under consideration.

These bills are in addition to the lawsuit filed on January 16 by the Attorney General of New York on behalf of 21 states and the District of Columbia claiming this FCC decision was “arbitrary, capricious, and an abuse of discretion within the meaning of the Administrative Procedure Act” (APA) of 1946 and other grounds. These states were New York, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington state. New Jersey reportedly later committed to join the suit.

These four executive orders are the only actions on FFTF’s list of actions by net neutrality supporters that seem immediately enforceable. All others require approval by democratic bodies. The four executive orders might be challenged in courts as conflicting with “Preemption authority” claimed by the US Federal Communications Commission’s “Declaratory ruling, report and order” adopted December 14 and released January 4. The FCC order was described by dissenting Commissioner Clyburn as “Destroying Internet Freedom” rather than “Restoring Internet Freedom” as the order is titled. She wrote that this order “will put profits and shareholder returns above what is best for” consumers.
