ANZACs remembered ninety years after assault on Gallipoli

Monday, April 25, 2005

Australians and New Zealanders throughout the world stood still for their national war memorial days in remembrance of the failed Australian and New Zealand Army Corps — ANZAC — attack on Gallipoli, Turkey that began on 25 April 1915. The fateful attack was designed to end the First World War more quickly by creating a supply line to Russia. A hundred-thousand died in the battle, remembered every year as ANZAC Day by both nations.

The British-directed battle of Gallipoli is often seen as the defining moment in the ‘birth’ of Australia and New Zealand. With New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark saying “For New Zealand as for Australia it was at Gallipoli that our young nations came of age.” [1]. This being the 90th anniversary of the attack, Clark, Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Britain’s Prince Charles are all at Gallipoli to remember that fateful campaign.

Some controversy has been created about Australian Prime Minister John Howard not attending the New Zealand ceremony at Chunuk Bair on the Gallipoli Peninsula. This has upset many people as it is a break in a tradition that the Prime Ministers attend the ceremonies of both countries.

Four stabbed to death at Paris police headquarters

Saturday, October 5, 2019

On Thursday at the headquarters of the Paris Police Prefecture in Paris, France, an IT worker went on a stabbing spree, killing four. A fifth person was hospitalized in critical condition. The attacker was shot dead by police. Three of the victims were male police officers and the fourth was a female office worker.

Officials said the three officers were stabbed with a kitchen knife in their offices. The woman was killed in a stairwell. The attacker, a man, reached the courtyard before he was shot in the head by another police officer. Local prosecutor Remy Heitz said the suspect’s wife was taken into custody.

Officials said the man was 45 years old and born in the French territory of Martinique. He lived in Gonesse, a suburb of Paris. He was employed with the police since 2003 and was hearing impaired. According to Agence France-Presse, which cited sources close to the investigation, the man had converted to Islam a year-and-a-half ago.

The police headquarters, which is situated on an island in the river Seine, was blocked off after the attack. Cité station, part of the Paris Métro, was temporarily closed.

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, wrote on Twitter: “Paris is mourning its family this afternoon after this appalling attack on the [Police Prefecture]. The toll is heavy, several police lost their lives. In my name and that of the Parisians, my first thoughts go to the families of the victims and their relatives.”

Ten Tips For Decorating A Small Studio Apartment

By Jude Wright

Studio apartments can be difficult to decorate because everything is basically all in one big (or not so big) room. Sometimes this small space has to accommodate several different activities: sleeping, entertaining, cooking and an office area.

Here are ten tips for decorating a small studio apartment:

1. Provide enough storage. Try to find furnishings for your apartment that will do “double duty.” You can even find chairs and ottomans that have storage areas inside of them. Just lift up the top and there you will find space for blankets, pillows or other items.

2. Use containers to hide clutter. Buy wicker baskets or old steamer trunks to store out-of-season clothing, linens and towels. They will look great and contain all of those small items that make a room look cluttered.

3. Use mirrors to reflect the light. A large mirror or several small mirrors placed strategically can make a small space feel lighter and larger. If you like a more modern style of decorating, furniture and tables with metal or glass can visually expand the space.

4. Don’t block the light. Covering every window with blinds and draperies can make a small room feel dark and crowded. Leave windows bare or only cover with sheer draperies to let the light shine through. Light always makes a space seem larger.

5. Place furniture in “rooms.” Try to create specific areas for specific activities. Put a bed and dresser in one area for the bedroom and a sofa and coffee table in another area. Having your apartment furnishings put any-old-way can make it cluttered and uninviting. You might have to leave out the bed and use a sleeper sofa if your apartment is super-small.

6. Create a focus. If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace, accentuate it. Even if you don’t have a natural focal point, create one. Painting just one wall a different color will draw the attention into the room an make it seem bigger. Put a large credenza or entertainment center on that wall and decorate it with beautiful accessories.

7. Use dividers for larger apartments. You can find beautiful dividers in both thrift shops and high end furniture stores. Use them to enclose various areas of your space. I saw an episode on HGTV where they used four beautiful wooden dividers to make a separate bedroom. It not only provided a private sleeping area, but also created another “wall” on which to place furniture.

8. Keep clutter at bay. When you have a small area, clutter is not an option. Too many knick-knacks and too much furniture crowds everything together too much. Keep your necessary items, such as extra bed linens put away in a dresser or wicker baskets. Kitchen counters should be kept clean with everything in the cupboardsif possible.

9. Another trick for a small space is to buy furniture with legs and that are higher off of the floor. Your eye will look “under” these pieces of furniture and add visual space. Furniture that is blocky and low to the ground makes a room appear more crowded.

10. Paint with lighter colors. You don’t have to use white, but using paint colors that are lighter in color expands a space more than dark colors.

Decorating a studio apartment can be a challenging task, but using the above tips can help you get started in the right direction.

Kosovo: voters go to the polls for the first time since independence declared from Serbia

Sunday, November 15, 2009

Voting polls opened in Kosovo at 7am (0600 UTC); the first time since declaring independence from Serbia last year. Both ethnic Albanians and the minority Serb population may vote for local mayors and councillors, a move seen as testing the government’s capacity to organise its own democratic elections. The territory was run by the United Nations mission before its split from Serbia in February 2008.

On Friday, President Fatmir Sejdiu stressed the importance of the elections. And, calling on the 1.5 million eligible voters to mobilise, said “[t]his Sunday should prove to the world that Kosovo is a stable country that produces peace and stability in the region”.

This Sunday should prove to the world that Kosovo is a stable country that produces peace and stability in the region

The Kosovo police have tightened security, and the 13,000 Kosovo Force troops — a NATO-led peacekeeping force — are on standby, according to its commander, General Markus Bentler. Local and international observers will monitor polls.

The main concern is the number of citizens who will vote, as only a 40% turnout level is expected. According to the BBC, most of the 120,000 Serbs oppose Kosovo’s independence. The government in Belgrade and the Serbian Orthodox Church have called for a boycott.

Polling stations are due to close at 7pm (1800 UTC); the first unofficial results are expected late Sunday evening.

Earthquake-damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant triggers evacuation

Friday, March 11, 2011

File:Fukushima-1.JPG

Japan’s government has declared its first ever “nuclear emergency” after pressure rises in the No. 1 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, combined with a minor radiation leak, caused a 10 km radius around the plant to be evacuated. An attempt to relieve the pressure inside the containment vessels of the plant has been delayed.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company’s 40-year old nuclear facility, 270 km NE of Tokyo, reported mechanical difficulties with its cooling system, although the automated shutdown systems worked correctly. With the core reaction shut down the plant is no longer actively generating heat, but the fuel rods continue to generate excess heat and radiation and need constant cooling.

The cooling system runs a constant flow of water to take the heat away from the submerged fuel rods, but the pumping system requires electricity to operate even after the plant is no longer producing electricity itself—generally from back-up diesel or natural gas generators.

The Coolest Vans Ever Made!

by

Haylee Taylor

What do you picture when you hear the word van mentioned? Clapped out old bangers or white van men perhaps? Well think again, because theres a whole world of van customisation going on out there. From pimped out vans with super-powerful stereo systems to creatively painted campervans in the style of the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo – its all out there!

Nissan NV200 This particular van has been seriously done up in a bid to revolutionise the commercial vans market, and the makers say, In the NV200, function becomes the aesthetic . Theyre not wrong either – it looks awesome! Sleek and sophisticated, the NV200 incorporates a home office, living quarters and its own fridge; all brought together in a funky black and lime green colour scheme. Seriously cool. Crazy Japanese Vans The Japanese are known for their incredibly creative ways (their wild fashion outfits immediately springing to mind). We can now confidently extend their styling repertoire to the world of vans too, with some particularly eye-catching examples taking the shape of gaudy vehicles with massive, shark fin-shaped spoilers used to incredible effect. Wild colours and cartoon characters (Hello Kitty anyone?) are also the order of the day with these beauties. We love Japan. Hippy Vans Flower power, love and peace to you all! Campervans are firmly associated with the hippy movement and there are some great examples of customised vans covered in 60s artwork, peace symbols and acrylic flowers adorning the chassis. You can almost hear the love chants as they trundle by… Camera Van No, not the camera vans from the movies where geeky cops stake out the local bad boy whilst eating copious amounts of pizza. This camera van is in fact completely covered in cameras, with a sinister smile motif on the roof. It was created after owner Harrod Blank had a dream where his van was adorned head to toe in functional cameras and he drove around America taking pictures of people. Unlike most people, Harrod actually took action and turned his dream into a reality. Impressive! We hope these examples of creative van customisations have got you in the mood for pumping some new life into your old van (if youve got one that is). Just remember to take out some decent van insurance and youre all good to go!
