Drunk woman hits police car in Sydney

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

A woman with a blood alcohol reading of 0.14 has been arrested and charged after crashing into a police car in Kings Cross, a suburb of Eastern Sydney early this morning.

Police officials claim the 27 year old woman was driving a Volkswagen the wrong way down a one way street when she collided with a police car parked outside Kings Cross Police Station. Following the collision, the woman drove off. Police later found the woman’s car in a nearby alleyway where she and a male were standing.

Both the woman and her companion were taken to Kings Cross Police Station where they were questioned about the incident. While at the station, police conducted a breath test on the woman, which returned a reading of 0.14 – almost 3 times the blood alcohol limit of 0.05 in New South Wales. Further investigation revealed that the woman did not hold a driver’s licence.

The woman was charged with mid-range PCA (driving under the influence of alcohol), driving whilst unlicensed and failing to give particulars after an accident.

The woman was not injured in the accident and the police car suffered only minor damage.

The Ethical Issues With Tube Feeding: Right Or Wrong?

The Ethical Issues With Tube Feeding: Right Or Wrong?

by

Gloria Hao Schneider

Most of us know it as tube feeding, but doctors can also refer to it as Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG). As opposed to most kinds of surgery, it is a safe, uncomplicated and a routine procedure. But whether it’s a simple procedure or not is not the issue at stake. PEG is the focus of some ethical questions in today’s health care industries.

Unlike every other method of feeding, PEG feeding does not require the consent of the person undergoing the treatment. For the most part, PEG is a form of forced feeding and is used in nursing homes, hospitals and assisted living facilities. Since their development about a quarter of a century ago, PEG tubes have become widely used. Originally designed to provide nourishment to children, PEG tubes are now frequently used in senior adults who have diseases or conditions that make it difficult to swallow or eat voluntarily. PEG is a complex issue because it implements forced feeding which is done without the consent of the patient usually towards the end of their life when they have basically become invalid.

Most complications are minor and occur in small percentage of cases. Usually, these involve easily treatable and non-threatening wound infections, along with bleeding or abdominal pain. Clogging can also be an issue with PEGs. Accidental or deliberate removal of the tube by the patient is another common complication. Restraints may be required in order to prevent patients from pulling out the tube. Major complications are rare, occurring in only 1-2. The risk of death increases markedly with age. Infection is a rare, though a potentially serious complication. Even rarer complications are severe bleeding and intestinal obstruction.

Several medical studies question the actual benefit of PEGs to the patient undergoing this procedure and feel that this unnecessarily prolongs the pain and suffering of the patient. Especially in regards to elderly citizens with dementia, these patients are the highest percentage that goes through PEG procedures. There is also an alarmingly high death rate for patients within one month of receiving PEGs. It is crucial for patients, friends, and family to have a full discussion with their doctor before a PEG procedure is performed. The goal should be a clear understanding of the medical goals and moral dilemma behind the issue. Assisted Living facilities understand what a delicate matter the use of PEGs is and ensure that their patients undergo procedures that will benefit them and addresses the problems of their medical conditions. The procedures and medications utilized by assisted living facilities to care for patients are discussed with the patients themselves as well as their families so everyone is well aware and informed.

Microsoft to track legal marijuana with new partner Kind Financial

Microsoft to track legal marijuana with new partner Kind Financial

Sunday, June 19, 2016

Microsoft announced on Thursday they are partnering with KIND Financial to help governments track the production and distribution of legal marijuana. Kind Financial, a California-based start-up company, began selling its Agrisoft Seed to Sale software three years ago. Microsoft is admitting Kind’s software on the Government portion of its Azure cloud service.

Although Kind Financial CEO David Dinenberg stressed to The Guardian they “absolutely do not touch the plant”, his company does business with growers and distributors of marijuana, as well as the governments that regulate it. State law in twenty-five US states — but not US federal law — has legalized marijuana, whether medicinally or for recreational use. Kimberly Nelson, Microsoft executive director of state and local government solutions, said they expect significant demand for technology to help states make sure cannabis distribution within their state is done according to their laws.

Kind also provides kiosks similar to automated tellers (ATMs) to facilitate marijuana transactions in dispensaries. The distribution of marijuana is often done only with cash or through machines like the ones Kind offers since many banks in the United States shy away from the marijuana industry entirely. Microsoft is not interacting with this part of Kind’s operations, however.

Microsoft and Kind will apply for contracts with state governments for their software. Currently, they have applied to Puerto Rico, a US territory, where medical marijuana has recently been made legal. BioTrackTHC, a company similar to Kind Financial, already has contracts with Washington, New Mexico, and Illinois.

Dinenberg said his company’s partnership with Microsoft is a major step in advancing the legitimacy of cannabis-related businesses.

Source of UK foot-and-mouth outbreak discovered

Wednesday, September 5, 2007

The source of a recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Surrey, UK has been discovered by investigators at the Pirbright laboratory where investigations began in August. The Health and Safety Executive informed the BBC that they had pinpointed the source to possible biosecurity lapses in a pipe near the laboratory. It is thought that the pipe, which runs between the site and a government-run laboratory, may have been damaged by tree roots.

Recent flooding in the area may have brought the virus to the surface, but it is not yet known how the virus arrived on nearby farmland. The Health and Safety Executive, however, confirmed that vehicles from the Pirbright laboratory had used a road adjoining to the farmland where the outbreak was found.

Neither Merial, the pharmaceutical company who own the Pirbright laboratory, or the government have claimed ownership of the pipe, but Merial have refused to comment before a full report has been published.

Single Strollers Keep You Going

By David Cummings

Single strollers are made for a single infant or child. They come in many shapes and sizes, different fabrics and colors. Most of the single strollers adjust with growth of your child. For instance, when you baby is an infant, you can adjust the stroller so that it looks more like a ‘pram’ or ‘carriage’, laying flat with all the sides up so baby can lie down. There are security straps to make sure the baby lies in place as well.

When the infant grows a little and can sit up more, you can bring the front end of the stroller down and allow their feet to dangle but they don’t touch the ground and the back up for a more upright ride. Single strollers have many advantages that double and triple strollers do not; they have more room for things such as storage underneath and on the backside of the stroller. You can purchase additional stroller accessories like a tray with cup holders to clip on to the back to hold the parent’s cups and keys.

Today’s manufacturers are thinking more along the lines of function and fashion. There are single strollers that look like tractors for boys and princess carriages for girls. The wheels are double and roll on ball bearings to be able to maneuver better on any surface, like uneven pavement or trails or a flat store floor. The single strollers are constructed of durable metal tubing covered with a woven fabric that resists tears and is water and stain resistant.

Some of the single strollers can be classified as umbrella strollers because they have curved handles like umbrellas and fold up compact like an umbrella for easy storage. These single strollers are popular for a number of reasons, mostly because they are lightweight and are easily stored away, taking up little space in the mini van or trunk of a car or even hanging up in the garage.

Other single strollers are classified as jogging strollers and have three large wheels, one in the front and two in the back. The one wheel in the front can be ‘fixed’ so it can’t move other than straight ahead for jogging and exercise purposes. Jogging strollers are popular as regular single strollers because they are large and comfortable for the baby or child and can easily be maneuvered through a crowd of people at a parade or fair.

Single strollers are never meant for more than one child or baby. This would cause a safety hazard and could hurt your child. There are double strollers for two children or you could purchase a ‘jump seat’ or a stroller foot board that attaches to the back of a single stroller so the other child, usually an older one, can stand on the back or sit facing the opposite direction. These are not that expensive and hook on to the framework of single strollers. Your older child will enjoy a ride along on the single strollers and everyone will be happy.

Belgian bus company knows solution for car parking problems

Belgian bus company knows solution for car parking problems

Monday, May 21, 2007

Do you have a hard time finding a parking space? Take the bus or tram if you go to the city. That’s the message Belgian bus company De Lijn (The Line) is sending to promote public transport as a solution for car parking problems. As a part of their media campaign, they have jokingly suggested that people use the top of the busses as parking space.

Another idea they are using in their media campaign: maybe you could park your car on the bottom of a canal? The bus company is using an invented diving company called Cardive, which has divers that offer to dump your car in the canal. The divers walk around in cities and hand out free bus tickets and maps of the bus network.

To reach car drivers who are not using public transport, the media campaign has several radio commercials that present other solutions to the car parking problem. You could use “asphalt-spray” to camouflage your car, making it invisible for policemen (although you then need to remember where you’ve parked). Or you could use the “flat tire kit”, which comes with a fake flat tire and an inflatable dummy, so it looks like you’re replacing your flat tire. The final idea the bus company has is to use a View-Master to fool parking guards into believing that your car has been stationed correctly.

A survey among 4000 customers of De Lijn shows that two out of three car owners who use public transport, do so to avoid parking space troubles, and in cities this percentage rises to 90%. The survey further shows that 39% use the bus to go shopping.

During the month of May, the auto-bus and the divers tour several cities in Flanders (Leuven, Hasselt, Ghent, Bruges and Antwerp).

UK shopping centre Afflecks Palace secures its future

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

Afflecks Palace, the “iconic, alternative shopping centre” in the Northern Quarter of Manchester in England, United Kingdom, was saved from closure this week after long-running rumours that the market may have to “kick out its traders” due to a dispute between the management of the Afflecks Palace brand and the leaseowner for the building, Bruntwood.

Rumours suggesting that Bruntwood were looking to redevelop the building started early in 2007, when it became apparent that the property developer was not actively seeking to renew the twenty-five year lease that the management of Afflecks Palace had with them concerning the building. These initial fears were added to by news that Bruntwood was looking to redevelop other buildings it owned in the Northern Quarter area, specifically the parking complex opposite Afflecks, with an eye towards taking advantage of the “property boom” in Manchester at the time. There were also fears that if Afflecks did remain open, “rents would rise”.

These initial fears were eventually propagated closer to the end of the year when a letter from the management of Afflecks Palace told individual stall holders that “… management have received no formal response from Bruntwood to a tenancy request notice served in October [2007]”, going on to add that “We can only assume therefore that they do not intend to offer us a new lease”.

Following the release of this letter, public support for Afflecks Palace was quickly made obvious when a 5,000 signature petition was submitted demanding the centre remain open for business. This seemed to prompt talks between Bruntwood and the Afflecks Palace management and, eventually, lead to this week’s news that the market was – indeed – to remain open. The result of the talks was that Bruntwood “bought out” the Afflecks Palace brand.

Bruntwood will manage Afflecks while they look for a new owner who is skilled in running market style businesses

A joint statement between the management of Afflecks Palace and Bruntwood said: “After 26 years of trading, Afflecks’ management has sold their company to Bruntwood in an agreement that protects the future of Afflecks. Bruntwood will manage Afflecks while they look for a new owner who is skilled in running market style businesses and can bring a similar level of enthusiasm and dedication that the existing management has.”

A spokesperson speaking on behalf of Bruntwood also added that: “Never in our 30 year history have we bought one of our customer’s businesses, but Afflecks is a Manchester icon that we wanted to protect. We aren’t however expert in managing markets, so will look for a suitable long term owner. In the meantime, the most important aspect is that we have arrived at a solution with Afflecks management that protects an independent retail environment and provides the existing stallholders with security.”

Traders from the market celebrated the news by holding a party yesterday.

Feng Shui Choosing A Real Estate Lot For Your Home , Chalet Or Cabin

By Syd Z Nohcus

Building a home – house, cottage or chalet? It’s not only the home with its fixtures that are major considerations in terms of Feng Shui but also your choice of lot or what might be considered plot or ‘the plot’.

Some home buyers or builders will place great emphasis and cost on the physical building itself yet play little attention to the ‘land’ or lot itself. Yet years later when it comes time to sell that beautiful home, that investment, the lot itself may be the limiting factor in the basic selling price of their home. It may be the physical location – a 2 million dollar home facing a group of older rental duplexes for example. If you think of it as a potential home buyer – who wants to spend that kind of money, spend big dollars on city and municipal taxes every year and yet come out each morning and view a less than elaborate residential neighborhood view when paying such good money for a property. Ultimately every home has a buyer at a given price. With a less than optimal choice on a lot a house may sell for a lot less than had the home builder spent a higher percentage of the total building budget on the lot.

What can be said about lot choice in terms of Feng Shui?

In Feng Shui, a square shape, is it a lot, a room, or a table. Denotes stability and balance. Qi is able to flow freely, unobstructed. Ideally, your house should be situated in the center of a lot, allowing qi to circulate around the structure and through its windows and doors. Your occupants will be nourished and satisfied. Next in opportunity in lot purchases and availability are rectangular lots. If your dwelling is situated a front of the lot, Qi flows in and accumulates in the back area of the land.

Your wealth and health will be secure and safeguarded. Think of it all as being similar as a wealth person with lots of cash in the bank to provide a strong foundation against winds of change or instability. On the flip side of the coin a deep front yard, although appearing massive and inflating the apparent size, and or perceived value of the home, is not a wise idea. It’s the opposite of the model of the wealthy individual, above, with cash in the bank resisting negative forces. With a large oversize front lot, along with a very small rear pace you will have difficulty retaining money, stability and overall power. Not a wise idea for the desirability and marketability of your home – of course along with a sales price.

Currently you may come across odd sized lots – trapezoids. These are not wise choices – even if they are exotic and may be bundled with very attractive and competitive pricing. It’s almost as if developers are repackaging the left overs of what is still around in a new and wonderfully inspiring format. None of these lot types are good choices. Simple as that. Sheng qi , inspiring good health, must squeeze into that trapezoid shaped lot. Like a bottleneck, the forces must maneuver through the tight opening in order to accumulate in back. Trapezoid lots are not a wise choice for this reason. On the other side you may come across inverted trapezoid lots. Qi will have no trouble entering, but a difficult time staying. Again not a wise overall choice in lot shape. Lastly is the triangular lot, which should be avoided at all costs. It is very difficult to position anything inside or outside the home that does not create sha qi. On top of that angular, triangular lots are most disorientating.

In the end pay particular care when choosing the lot type of your new abode. The basic premise when purchasing real estate is to consider future resale value and sales desirability as a major component in any real estate decisions. This includes the choice of the lot or plot as well. Spending more up front in the beginning may be a very wise choice in your real estate mix. Feng Shui.

Cloned cattle’s milk and meat seem safe, according to new study

Cloned cattle’s milk and meat seem safe, according to new study

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

A National Academy of Sciences report (.pdf) last year said that while the milk and meat from cloned animals would not likely make anyone sick, more research should be performed. Now, a new US-Japan study published in the April 11 online issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says that milk and meat from cloned cattle does indeed appear to meet industry standards and appears to be safe for human consumption.

As BBC News reports, the scientists, led by Professor Jerry Yang from the University of Connecticut, compared the produce from two beef and four dairy clones, all derived from a single Holstein dairy cow and a single Japanese black bull, with the produce from normal animals of similar age and breed.

The meat was analysed against more than 100 physiological, tissue and cellular components, while the milk was analysed for protein, fat and other variables. No significant differences between the produce of cloned and normal cattle were found. Higher levels of fat and fatty acids were found in the cloned cow meat, but they still fell within beef industry standards.

While the study showed the cloned produce to be within the range approved for human consumption, the scientists stressed that the research was still in its early stages. Their findings, they said, provide “guidelines” for further research with larger numbers of clones from different genetic backgrounds.

Cloning livestock may one day increase yields by copying those animals that are especially productive and especially resistant to disease.

“The milking production levels in the US are three to four times higher than levels in China; maybe even five times or more compared to cows in India and some other countries,” Professor Jerry Yang told BBC News. “Therefore cloning could offer technology for duplicating superior farm animals. However, all the products from these cloned animals must be safe for human consumption. …and it is a major issue for scientists to provide a scientific basis for the data and information to address this question.”

As USA Today reports, there is currently no law governing the sale of meat or milk from the estimated 1,000 to 2,000 cloned farm animals in the USA. But since 2003, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has asked producers to voluntarily keep the meat and milk of these animals, and that of their offspring, out of the food supply.

Wired News reports that companies like ViaGen and Cyagra, which offer livestock-cloning services, have also been waiting for several years for a final say from the FDA.

“For the United States agricultural industry, (cloning) can reduce the number of cows necessary for milking,” said Jerry Yang “They can have a pleasant environment and produce even more milk.” He also said that cloning cattle from the United States, where genetic breeding is more advanced, could save developing countries 50 years of breeding.

The idea of cloning animals for human consumption is not without its critics. First, there are the welfare concerns, as most cloned animals do not make it to term before being born, and many of those that do are born deformed or prone to illness. The Humane Society of the United States has asked for a ban on milk and meat from clones for just this reason. Second, there is still the concern that healthy clones may have subtle defects that could make their food products unsafe to eat.

As the Washington Post reports, some critics are asking why it is necessary to clone cows that produce huge amounts of milk when surpluses, rather than shortages, are the main problem facing the U.S. dairy industry today.
