Appendicitis means Inflammation of the vennifonn appendix is termed as appendicitis. The blockage may be due to a build-up of thick mucus within the appendix or to stool that enters the appendix from the cecum. It is commonest in children and young adults and is the most frequent cause for surgery in this age group. When treated promptly, most patients recover without difficulty.

Symptoms of appendicitis include severe abdominal pain the starts at the navel and radiates to the lower right abdomen. Coughing, sneezing, deep breaths, moving or touching the area makes the pain worse. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal swelling, mild fever, constipation, painful urination, inability to pass gas, blood in the urine and an elevated white blood cell count are also signs of appendicitis. Without treatment, the appendix could burst, releasing fecal matter into the area.Home RemediesWhile this is a very painful condition, there are several natural remedies for appendicitis that you can use right in your home. The first of these remedies is using Green Gram to help remedy appendicitis. You will want to take this ingredient three times a day, but only use one tablespoon per sitting. This will help relieve the pain as well as treat the infection. In 1 litre cold water, add 1 tbsp of fenugreek seeds and cook on low flame. Simmer for half an hour and then strain. Allow it to cool a bit before drinking. As a part of appendicitis home remedy treatment, tea made from fenugreek seeds is considered valuable.A diet which emphasizes raw, fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains and at least eight glasses of liquid a day will provide the fiber needed to prevent constipation and minimize the risk of the appendix becoming infected. Raw food also provides enzymes, which help boost the immune system. Two tablespoons of flax seeds daily will keep stools soft and prevent constipation. Take garlic regularly to boost the immune system. Eat lactic acid fermented foods such as natural, unsweetened yogurt, kefir and sauerkraut regularly to keep the bacterial culture in the colon healthy.Apply a cold pack to control the swelling, such as crushed ice in a plastic bag, a cold gel pack, or a bag of frozen peas or green beans. Wrap the cold pack in a dishcloth so that it does not contact your skin directly. When the pack warms up, refreeze it and reapply it later. I use two 12 x 18 in gel packs, so one is always in the freezer.Lecithin seeds Lecithin seeds are another effective home remedy for the treatment of Swelling of Feet during Pregnancy. Take 3-4 tablespoon of lecithin seeds every day for 2-3 month. This has a magical effect and shows great result within 2-3 months.Dandelion ( Taraxacum officinale , 2 – 8 g per day) — has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Be sure you do not have an allergy to dandelion, and avoid taking the herb if you have liver or gallbladder disease, diabetes, or kidney disease, or if you take blood-thinning medication. The patient of appendicitis should under all circumstances avoid constipation. Once the waste matter in the caecum has moved into the colon and is then eliminated, the irritation and inflamation in the appendix will subside and surgical removal of the appendix may not be needed.

As families fled their homes in the early morning hours on Thursday October 26, there was no warning. The Esperanza Fire southeast of Los Angeles and West of Palm Springs, California, had ballooned under the influence of Santa Ana winds to more than 19,000 acres as of the morning of October 27. No time to get the animals, no time for crates or even a leash. Sadly, owners left behind not only their horses, lamas, donkeys, chickens, rabbits, but also their dogs and cats.

Many of the families who did manage to evacuate their pets found themselves in the parking lot at the Fellowship in the Pass Church Red Cross Shelter where a MuttShack Animal Rescue team caught up with them.

Pam Anderson, Director of the emergency Red Cross shelter said that many people with animals had come and left.

The air was thick with smoke, and ash was raining down on the parking lot where dog owners, not able to take their dogs into the shelter were camping out in pup tents andin their cars.

Those who could afford it checked themselves into pet friendly hotels in nearby towns.

Some were prepared. Jane Garner, a small dog breeder was able to get all her animals out, and had set up her puppy runs alongside her RV in the parking lot. Others were not doing too well, having left home without as much as a leash.

The same scenario played out at the Red Cross shelter at Hemet High School. Animals were being boarded in vans, trailers and cars and small travel crates.

When MuttShack Animal Rescue arrived, a small fracas had sent several dogs off in different directions, running out of the school parking lot down busy streets necessitating an instant rescue response.

The Incident Command for the Esperanza Animals, Ramona Humane Society in San Jacinto welcomed MuttShack‘s offer to help at the shelters.

Ramona Humane Society had recently published a notice in their Newsletter about the newly passed “PETS Act”and warned owners not wait until a major disaster such as an earthquake or fireto prepare. “Be proactive to ensure that your pet will be taken care of.”

MuttShack and PetSmart Charities set up ad hoc facilities for the animals at both shelters.

The Red Cross shelter, run by Madison Burtchaell of the Orange County Red Cross was very accommodating about allowing a small emergency pet shelter adjacent to the School.

Barbara A. Fought of PetSmart Charities, an organization that works with animal welfare organizations and provide assistance in disasters, provided crates and emergency supplies.

MuttShack and Red Cross volunteers, Martin St. John, Tom Hamilton, and Steve Meissner helped assemble the crates to secure a safe environment for evacuated pets.

It was a great relief for evacuees who had camped out in the parking lot to finally leave their vehicles and relax at the shelter, setting up their cots to grab some sorely needed rest.

Firefighters and residents reported loss of wildlife and animals. The Esperanza fire burned 34 homes, consumed 40,000 acres and cost five Firefighters their lives before it was contained four days later on October 30. Firefighting operations cost nearly $10 million.

MuttShack Animal Rescue is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization active in disasters and dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and care of lost or discarded dogs, cats and other animals.

Ahern, Blair restate deadline on devolution

Ahern, Blair restate deadline on devolution

Thursday, June 29, 2006

Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and British Prime Minister Tony Blair have stated that the November 24 deadline for formation of a devolved, power-sharing government is final and that it is the last chance for parties to restore devolution in Northern Ireland. The two prime ministers met in Belfast at Stormont today with the major parties about the deadline.

Blair stated he would shut down the Northern Ireland Assembly, cut the salary and benefits of all 108 members and forge a stronger direct rule with the Republic of Ireland. He also stated that both governments were not willing to continue talks past the deadline and would instead work on developing joint policies in Northern Ireland.

Blair who is under pressure to resign by next year is seeking a more permanent peace settlement before he leaves office.

“This is the last chance for this generation, really, to make this process work,” Blair said. “We’ve come a long way, but we need to get the rest of the way now.”

Ahern said that he wanted to see the institutions active as soon as possible. He added, “The reality of this is that if we don’t do this by November 24 then we lose a huge opportunity.”

The two prime ministers have also published a in-depth time-line stating what negotiators must accomplish to establish a joint power-sharing administration, one of the main goals of the Good Friday Agreement signed in 1998, by the deadline.

The administration would be led by the two main parties, the Democratic Unionist Party led by Ian Paisley and Sinn Féin, led by Gerry Adams.

The parties gave their opinions over the visit by the prime ministers.

The deputy leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, Peter Robinson, said their party stressed the need for the assembly to meet. He added, “If negotiations are going to begin in the autumn, then the assembly is going to have to meet between now and then. We can not move on to the next stage unless we move in the sequence of scoping the issues, debating the issues and then negotiating the issues.” Robinson is referring to the fact that the Assembly will go on a summer recess soon.

Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams hoped the process could move on. “The two governments sought to reassure us of their total commitment to the November 24 deadline and their commitment to making this process work. “We now want them to match that verbal commitment with action in the time ahead,” stated Adams.

Yesterday, Sinn Féin announced that the party is thinking of withdrawing from the Northern Ireland Assembly in autumn, after launching an internal review. The review could shift the party’s focus from a devolution deal to the next election if the deal is unlikely by the November 24 deadline.

The leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, Sir Reg Empey, said that anyone who has no intention of meeting the November 24 deadline should “have the guts to say so”. Empey added, “We want to see devolution restored if the conditions are right at the time and we will spare no effort to see that is achieved.”

David Ford, the leader of the Alliance Party said that his party is sharing the frustration of the people of Northern Ireland. He added, “Alliance is prepared to work its socks off until November to get an assembly restored but we need the governments to play their part as well.”

The leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party, Mark Durkan, said ahead of his meeting with the two “The taoiseach and the prime minister shouldn’t have to be here today trying to make sense out of a lot of the nonsense that is coming from some of the parties. I hope the two premiers are clear in their message today that they want to see the parties here get on with it, because that is what the public want to see.”

On May 15, the parties took their seats in the first session of the Northern Ireland Assembly since October 2002. The assembly had been suspended since 2002 over allegations of a republican spy ring. Direct rule from London has been in place since then.

A Preparation for Government Committee has been formed consisting of the various major parties, but progress has been slow. Especially since the DUP will not cooperate with Sinn Féin until the Irish Republican Army completely disbands. Last year, the IRA decommissioned their weaponry.

Blair and Ahern plan to return to Northern Ireland in October after the publication of a report on paramilitary activity.

Meanwhile, before meeting with the parties, the two prime ministers ventured to Ballymena, County Antrim to meet with cross-community students. The meeting is in response to murder of Michael McIlveen, a 15-year-old Catholic boy by a loyalist/unionist mob in County Antrim.

Ricky Hatton regains IBF light welterweight title

Ricky Hatton regains IBF light welterweight title

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton regained the IBF light welterweight title belt he relinquished less than 12 months ago when he defeated Juan Urango in Las Vegas, Nevada tonight.

“The Hitman” won by unanimous decision, as the fight went to 12 rounds. Despite early match odds suggesting Hatton would dominate the fight, this was not the case. Each round was close, but most pundits and judges alike agreed that Urango only won 1 of the 12 rounds, with Hatton taking the other 11.

Despite the unfamiliar confines of Las Vegas, Hatton looked touched by the ringing of football fan-like chants, familiar in British boxing, that rang around the arena, as more than half of it was filled by traveling support from across the atlantic.

Many in the UK will hope Hatton has ended the “curse” that has seen names such as Frank Bruno, Naseem Hamed, Barry McGuigan and others fall short while headlining fights on “The Strip”.

From here, it is widely believed “The Hitman” will move on to fight Jose Luis Castillo in June, again likely in Vegas.

1. Laser Treatment

Lasers are available with different intensity and wavelength that are utilized accordingly to reform scar tissues. A vascular laser may be used for reducing the redness of acne scars. Layers of skin tissues may be removed to flatten scars with the use of a powerful carbon dioxide laser. Permanent results may sometimes be achieved with a single treatment only but redness may effect after a laser treatment, which will however fade away after a few months.

2. Collagen Injection

Collagen is a fibrous insoluble protein found in skin tissue that keeps skin elasticity and strength. This normal body substance is injected underneath the skin to raise sunken scars, by stretching and filling them out, to the level of surrounding skin. However, the effects of this treatment are only temporary, usually lasting three to six months, thus requiring supplementary injections at additional charge. It is also important to note that bovine collagen may cause allergic reactions to some individuals.

3. Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a procedure done under local anesthesia, which uses a wire brush or burr (also called fraise; a diamond wheel with rough edges) in removing the upper layers of the skin. The burr or brush rotates with high speed, taking off the destroyed layers and leveling the surface of the skin. Such process may injure or wound the skin, causing it to bleed. However, as the injuries and wounds heal, a fresh layer of skin develops to replace the removed damaged skin. Dermabrasion may result to pigmentation changes in darker-skinned individuals, which may require further treatment.

4. Autologous Fat Transfer/Micropilo injection

This is a procedure wherein fat from an individuals own body is taken and injected under the skin to raise sunken scars. Autologous fat transfer or micropiloinjection oftentimes require to be regularly repeated as fat reabsorption in the skin usually takes an average period of six to eighteen months.

5. Skin Grafting

Skin grafting is a surgical technique wherein skin substitute or skin is positioned over a wound as a permanent replacement of missing or damaged skin or to temporarily provide a covering for the wound. This procedure may only be essential in certain cases, such as in the closure of unroofed or defective sinus tracts that are sometimes caused by Dermabrasion.

Acne scars are oftentimes hard to prevent. And when they appear, all you can do is to treat it promptly and appropriately. Scars caused by acne can be treated in several ways, one of which is the dermatologic treatment. However, always remember the importance of consulting a dermatologist first before undergoing any kind of treatment.

Mukasey nomination as attorney general moves to US Senate

Mukasey nomination as attorney general moves to US Senate

Tuesday, November 6, 2007

The nomination of Judge Michael Mukasey as the next Attorney General of the United States, passed the Senate Judiciary Committee today and will move to a vote before the entire United States Senate. Two Democrats joined the nine Republicans to yield an 11-8 vote. Observers believe that Mukasey will easily succeed in the Senate vote.

The nomination of Mukasey by George W. Bush had originally drawn broad support. Nonetheless, Mukasey triggered a political row, during pre-confirmation questioning, when he refused to state that waterboarding amounted to illegal torture. In the end, he was able secure the votes of the two Democrats after assuring them that, if Congress passed legislation that made waterboarding illegal, he would in fact work to enforce such a law.

Patrick Leahy, Senator from Vermont, who opposed Mukasey said: “Some have sought to find comfort in Judge Mukasey’s personal assurance that he would enforce a future, a new law against waterboarding if this Congress were to pass one. Unsaid, of course, is the fact that any such prohibition would have to be enacted over the veto of the president.”

I don’t believe a leaderless department is in the best interests of the American people

“Now, I wish I could support Judge Mukasey’s nomination,” Senator Leahy further said. “I like Michael Mukasey. We have many things in common in our past careers. I certainly don’t question his intellectual ability or his independence.”

The two Democrats that voted for Mukasey were Senator Chuck Schumer of New York and Senator Dianne Feinstein of California. Schumer has been reported as suggesting Mukasey as Attorney General to White House during the search for a nominee.

Schumer defended his vote, saying: “If six months from now … the same policies continued, the victory in defeating Mukasey would seem hollow. No one questions that Judge Mukasey would do much to remove the stench of politics from the Justice Department. I believe we should give him that chance.”

Feinstein said that her vote for Mukasey was because, otherwise, Bush could have an acting Attorney General, who would not need confirmation, until the end of his term. In explaing this, she said: “I don’t believe a leaderless department is in the best interests of the American people or of the department itself. [Bush] appointed this man because he believes he is mainstream.”

Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts did not agree with Mukasey’s view on waterboarding. “Waterboarding is already illegal under United States law. It’s illegal under the Geneva Conventions, which prohibit outrages upon personal dignity, including cruel, humiliating and degrading treatment,” he said.

White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said of the committee vote: “Judge Mukasey has clearly demonstrated that he will be an exceptional attorney general at this critical time.”

Oil spilled after ships collide in Singapore

Oil spilled after ships collide in Singapore

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

Around 2500 tonnes of oil were spilled into the Strait of Singapore today after two ships collided.

The two ships involved in the collision were the oil tanker MT Bunga Kelana 3 and the bulk ship MV Wally, which collided around thirteen kilometers south of Singapore. The tanker received an estimated ten meter gash on its left side, while the bulk ship sustained only minor damage. After the incident, both ships moved away from the spill and are now anchored.

The oil slick has moved north, and is now now encompassing an estimated four square kilometers around six kilometers south of Singapore. Emergency teams from both Singapore and Malaysia have been mobilized, and around twenty vessels are taking part in the clean-up operations. Both containment booms and chemical dispersants are being used to clean up the oil.

The spill is not expected to have any major effects on shipping; Victor Shum, an official from a consulting firm in Singapore, said that “[i]f it is contained within an oil retaining booms, it may not disrupt shipping traffic. There is no comparison. That one has really no limit at this stage.” Shum also expressed environmental concerns, saying that “certainly the concerns are there. Even if it is contained, it will take some time to clean up.”

No crew members from either of the ships involved were reported to be injured.

Elderly Care: What To Consider}

Elderly Care: What to Consider

by

Jordan Rocksmith

It’s never easy to make the decision to take a loved one to an elder care clinic, but sometimes is is the only reasonable option. Many people decide to take care of their parent or their grandparent in their home, but that is not always the best option. Private homes are not often equipped with the safety precautions necessary to ensure the safety of an elderly person.

People who have a difficult time moving around sometimes need the assistance that wheelchairs, handrails, and medical staff can provide. It can be expensive to install these safety features in your home, and it often takes people who are trained in patient care to make sure they are being used appropriately. If any of these safety features are not used the right way, it could lead up to an injury to the person in need.

A clinic that specializes in elder care in Portland or your area has personnel that are available around the clock. It is their job to routinely check on the health of your loved one and to assist them with their needs at any time. Elder care clinics are also able to monitor the health condition of your loved one, and will document and treat any problems with their health. If the health of your elder-in-need is unstable, medical monitoring from licensed nurses can drastically improve their health condition.

Dietary changes can also make a big difference in the health of someone in need of an elder care clinic. An elder care clinic can test to make sure that a person is well-fed, demonstrating healthy weight, and that their organs are functioning properly. Certain factors like ingesting too much sodium can complicate an elderly person’s health immensely.

If you’d like to make sure that your loved one is getting the medical attention they need, you should contact a clinic that specializes inelder care in Portlandor your local area.

Tourist bus attacked by militants in Kashmir

Wednesday, May 31, 2006Terrorists in Kashmir threw a grenade at a tourist bus in the heart of Srinagar, killing one person and injuring 21 others. Eyewitnesses say that the vehicle, in which were travelling tourists from West Bengal was attacked near the Dal Gate. The injured are being treated at the Kashmir Institute for Medical Sciences.

No terrorist outfit has yet claimed responsibility for this attack, which is the fourth incident this week. This is also the second time tourists were the targets. The number of militant attacks this month has increased after Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh decided to hold a round table conference with the moderate parties in Kashmir.

State Tourism Director Farooq Ahmed Shah condemned the attack saying, “It is a very unfortunate incident and we are trying our level best to improve the situation. However, it is unfair to say that tourists are unsafe in the Valley. Such incidents take place all over the world.” Tour operators however are concerned that attacks such as this one will result in customers calling off trips to Kashmir.
