June jobs report shows rising US unemployment, economic outlook worsens

Saturday, July 9, 2011

The June jobs report for the US shows job growth has almost halted while the unemployment rate rose from 9.1% to 9.2%, much higher than March’s figure of 8.8%. Employers added only 18,000 new jobs, far fewer than the average of 215,000 per month added from February to April. These numbers add to fears that the economic recovery has stalled.

Analysts were predicting the job growth number for June to reach 125,000, according to a CNN poll.

It’s just an across-the-board retreat. This is two months of really scary reports.

Additionally, the figures for May were revised downward from 54,000 to 25,000 for a two month downward trend. To keep up with normal population growth, the US economy needs to increase the available jobs by 150,000 monthly. Only one fifth of the 8.8 million jobs lost since 2008 when the recession began have been added.

There was no encouraging news in the report. Government jobs fell by 39,000, and construction jobs remained stalled. Manufacturing added an anemic 6,000 jobs. The temporary-job industry lost positions for the third straight month. The average work week was reduced by 0.1 hours to 34.3. And the average hourly salary for private sector workers fell by one cent.

I view this number as a call to action. This number illustrates this thing that we knew, which is we’ve got to get the growth rate up.

The total number of unemployed people remains around 14.1 million, and 6.3 million have been unemployed at least six months.

“It’s just an across-the-board retreat,” said Heidi Shierholz, labor economist at the Economic Policy Institute. “This is two months of really scary reports.”

In an interview, Austan Goolsbee, Barack Obama’s chief economist said, “I view this number as a call to action. This number illustrates this thing that we knew, which is we’ve got to get the growth rate up. … When you see jobs reports like this, that should make it clear that we need to stop bickering, and get these things done.”

How Bio Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy Can Help With Your Menopausal Symptoms

byAlma Abell

If you’re experiencing menopausal symptoms, you may feel as if your life has turned upside down. When you’re middle aged and having unexplained fatigue and bouts of moodiness, this signifies that your hormones are imbalanced. Below, you’ll learn about some of the most common symptoms of menopause and how Bio-Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy may help to give you some relief.

Menopausal Symptoms

Even if you haven’t reached menopause just yet, your hormones may be starting to fluctuate and you may be noticing some of the symptoms. If you’ve already entered menopause, you may be experiencing mood swings, disruptive sleep, hot flashes, and weight gain. Other common signs of menopause include heart palpitations, migraine headaches, and osteoporosis. These symptoms occur as your hormones decrease, before and during menopause. To alleviate these symptoms and regain your natural hormone levels, you may want to consider hormone replacement.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Natural hormone replacements are made from plant derivatives and they work to match your body’s own hormones. One type of treatment, called Bio-Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy, consists of implanting pellets into the subcutaneous tissue in your hip every three months. As the pellets begin to replace the hormones that you’ve lost, you may begin to immediately notice a decrease in your menopausal symptoms.

Unlike synthetic hormone replacement therapy, natural treatments rarely cause side effects because they’re not made with artificial substances. The main ingredients in these all-natural replacement hormones are extracted from soybeans and wild yams. A customized treatment plan is created for each individual because of the differences in everyone’s body chemistry. Before beginning your treatments, you’ll be given a full examination to determine the level of hormone replacement that you’ll require. At scheduled intervals, you’ll undergo a routine blood test to evaluate the effects of your hormone therapy treatment. If necessary, your therapy is adjusted to achieve a natural balance of your hormone levels.

Some of the added benefits you may notice with natural hormone replacement therapy include increased stamina, stronger bones, and less joint pain. Renew Health & Wellness offers natural hormone replacement therapy for men and women. They also provide anti-aging therapy with Sermorelin injections and weight control with MIC injections.

Vietnam bans pet hamsters

Saturday, March 8, 2008

Fearing that their growing population might spread disease and destroy crops, Vietnam has banned the sale and possession of hamsters, which have launched somewhat of a subculture among the country’s youth.

Starting Monday, the fine for trading or owning a hamster will reach up to 30 million dong (1,875 US dollars), the Ministry of Agriculture said. They express concern that hamsters have been imported illegally from China, Thailand, or Taiwan, and are left unlicensed and unchecked for diseases.

“Traders illegally carry hamsters across borders and do not register with customs to quarantine these animals,” said a senior official of the Animal Health Department.

Although the Animal Health Department has said they will kill any hamster that has been imported illegally, there are no plans for a mass elimination of hamsters.

“Destroying them all is really a big problem,” agriculture ministry official Nguyen Thanh Son said. “I think the Vietnam animal health department should take some samples, conduct tests, and see how dangerous the hamsters in Vietnam really are.”

Hamsters arrived in Vietnam years ago for use in scientific research, but have only become popular recently. The rodents’ increasing popularity with youngsters has been attributed to 2008 being the Year of the Rat in the Chinese Zodiac. Their adoration can be seen online, where there are numerous forums allowing hamster owners to talk about their beloved pets. The craze has even spawned offline “hamster clubs”.

Athletes prepare for 2012 Summer Paralympics at the Paralympic Fitness Centre

Monday, August 27, 2012

London, England — As Paralympians ready for the Games which are set to open later this week, they have access to a world class fitness center inside the Paralympic Village which is designed to maximise their pre-Game preparations.

According to volunteers staffing the center, instead of being a single large room, as in Beijing, the building has numerous rooms. It, along with the adjacent Village Services Centre, is designed to be converted into a school after the games conclude. Rooms have been structured as a gym, an auditorium, and science laboratories.

Gym equipment is supplied by Technogym, an Italian firm that has supplied gym equipment for the Olympics since 2000. Equipment has been provided not just for for the Fitness Centre, but for gyms at all the Olympic venues. The newest equipment is oriented toward maximum flexibility, allowing athletes to exercise the particular muscles that they most require for their sport.

In addition to the equipment, the Fitness Centre also provides instructors trained in the use of the equipment, the likes of which athletes from many countries have never seen before. There are also a number of instructors available to provide motivational training.

Police ends demonstration of anarchist squatters in Belgium

Police ends demonstration of anarchist squatters in Belgium

Saturday, June 23, 2007

Last Monday, the police entered the abandoned house in Leuven, Belgium, that anarchist squatters had occupied for seven years. None of the squatters were present at the time, mostly due to exams. The premises was evacuated and the police dumped everything inside in containers. The house, which the squatters had baptised Villa Squattus Dei, belongs to the Catholic organisation Opus Dei.

As a reaction, the anarchists had called for a non-violent demonstration on Friday, starting at 20:00 p.m. (UCT+1) in front of city hall of the Flemish university town near Brussels. One of the protesters, who wished to remain anonymous, told Wikinews that the protest was mainly because the squatters were filled with indignation by the way the eviction took place. He also criticised the hypocrisy of the town mayor and politicians in the way they treated the squatters. Several media outlets reported speculation this week that some cases of arson were a retribution to the eviction of the Villa Squattus Dei.

The police had completely cordoned off the Great Market square with barb wire fences. All pubs were closed and the preparation for a festival taking place the next day on the square, were delayed. Well over 100 squatters, anarchists and supporters gathered next to the Great Market. The Flemish radio- and television station VRT reports that prior to the beginning of the demonstration, 10 people were already arrested.

The protesters marched through the city’s main streets. At a students house, which according to the squatters belongs to Opus Dei, the protesters threw paint, and a window got broken. During the demonstration, mayor Louis Tobback and alderman Brepoels responsible for housing, the police and Opus Dei were disparaged with slogans which translate to “You can’t evacuate ideals, fuck the police, squatting continues” and “Opus Dei get lost, Tobback go to your grave.”

The police blocked the crowd’s passage to the Court building, but besides a little pushing the demonstration was non-violent up to that point. A police helicopter started tracking the demonstration from the air.

On the Fish Market square, the police were pelted with stones and fireworks. A cameraman from VRT was hit by one of the stones and sustained a minor head injury. A little further down the street, some demonstrators started pushing an officer, and the police used their batons on the assailants, which they arrested.

Since the passage to the city centre was again blocked, the squatters led the protesters to a nearby park to get some rest and regroup. From there, the demonstration moved up a hill, and to the nearby ring road. The police could not prevent the crowd to get onto the busy road, stopping the traffic in both directions. The police decided to take decisive action, with police cars storming in, and officers chasing the scattered crowd through the nearby bushes of the nearby abbey. Dozens of protesters were arrested.

Via dark muddy forest roads, what was left over of the squatters and anarchists ended up near the canal harbour, where some of them decided to hide in another squat, an empty house and hangar.

As nearby inhabitants gathered, police reinforcements from several nearby cities arrived in front of the squat house. According to VRT journalists on the scene, some 250 officers pulled an extra shift that day.

Around 22:40 p.m. the police gave their first order to the squatters to evacuate the house. The area around the canal was completely sealed off. Some of the protesters were still among the crowd watching the police force, and the police arrested several more teenage protesters.

Meanwhile, the police shifted their actions to the city centre, where they hoped to arrest several groups who took part in the protest. All night long, police cars drove around in the city centre looking for anarchists and squatters.

Around 23:30 p.m. the squatters were still in their hideout near the canal, but the police force started leaving. There were only a few dozen protesters left in the squat, and the procedure to get a court order to evacuate them from the house hadn’t started yet, according to the Chief Constable on the scene.

This morning around 11:00 a.m., the only trace of the squatters left was graffiti on the squat and a flag with anarchist symbols and the words “squat the city”.
