Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Last night HBO premiered I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. Since its inception, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has made headlines and raised eyebrows. They are almost single-handedly responsible for the movement against animal testing and their efforts have raised the suffering animals experience in a broad spectrum of consumer goods production and food processing into a cause célèbre.

PETA first made headlines in the Silver Spring monkeys case, when Alex Pacheco, then a student at George Washington University, volunteered at a lab run by Edward Taub, who was testing neuroplasticity on live monkeys. Taub had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys’ fingers, hands, arms, legs; with some of the monkeys, he had severed the entire spinal column. He then tried to force the monkeys to use their limbs by exposing them to persistent electric shock, prolonged physical restraint of an intact arm or leg, and by withholding food. With footage obtained by Pacheco, Taub was convicted of six counts of animal cruelty—largely as a result of the monkeys’ reported living conditions—making them “the most famous lab animals in history,” according to psychiatrist Norman Doidge. Taub’s conviction was later overturned on appeal and the monkeys were eventually euthanized.

PETA was born.

In the subsequent decades they ran the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty against Europe’s largest animal-testing facility (footage showed staff punching beagle puppies in the face, shouting at them, and simulating sex acts while taking blood samples); against Covance, the United State’s largest importer of primates for laboratory research (evidence was found that they were dissecting monkeys at its Vienna, Virginia laboratory while the animals were still alive); against General Motors for using live animals in crash tests; against L’Oreal for testing cosmetics on animals; against the use of fur for fashion and fur farms; against Smithfield Foods for torturing Butterball turkeys; and against fast food chains, most recently against KFC through the launch of their website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

They have launched campaigns and engaged in stunts that are designed for media attention. In 1996, PETA activists famously threw a dead raccoon onto the table of Anna Wintour, the fur supporting editor-in-chief of Vogue, while she was dining at the Four Seasons in New York, and left bloody paw prints and the words “Fur Hag” on the steps of her home. They ran a campaign entitled Holocaust on your Plate that consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, each juxtaposing images of the Holocaust with images of factory farming. Photographs of concentration camp inmates in wooden bunks were shown next to photographs of caged chickens, and piled bodies of Holocaust victims next to a pile of pig carcasses. In 2003 in Jerusalem, after a donkey was loaded with explosives and blown up in a terrorist attack, Newkirk sent a letter to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat to keep animals out of the conflict. As the film shows, they also took over Jean-Paul Gaultier‘s Paris boutique and smeared blood on the windows to protest his use of fur in his clothing.

The group’s tactics have been criticized. Co-founder Pacheco, who is no longer with PETA, called them “stupid human tricks.” Some feminists criticize their campaigns featuring the Lettuce Ladies and “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads as objectifying women. Of their Holocaust on a Plate campaign, Anti-Defamation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said “The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent.” (Newkirk later issued an apology for any hurt it caused). Perhaps most controversial amongst politicians, the public and even other animal rights organizations is PETA’s refusal to condemn the actions of the Animal Liberation Front, which in January 2005 was named as a terrorist threat by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

David Shankbone attended the pre-release screening of I Am An Animal at HBO’s offices in New York City on November 12, and the following day he sat down with Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her perspectives on PETA, animal rights, her responses to criticism lodged against her and to discuss her on-going life’s work to raise human awareness of animal suffering. Below is her interview.

Toilet paper running thin in New Jersey capital

Toilet paper running thin in New Jersey capital

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Toilet paper supplies in Trenton, the capital of the US state of New Jersey, may run out by week’s end following their city council’s dispute over budgets.

The council has declined to sign a contract for paper products worth $42,573 after falling out over a $4,000 charge for paper cups.

Lauren Ira, a spokeswoman for Mayor Tony Mack, said that while the money has been made available to purchase the tissue, the Council is unwilling to sign the contract. The decision means that buildings such as Trenton City Hall may run out of toilet paper by Friday.

Former police officer George Muschal, now Trenton’s South Ward Councilman, spoke of the decision in an interview with Bloomsberg. He said the Council was not willing to bow to Mack’s order for paper cups, designed to carry hot beverages. He cited reports that the extreme nature of the order was down to fears some cups would be “stolen” for home use. He told the website: “We’re the checks and balances over the administration, and we’re not going to send out any blank checks.”

The rejected contract for paper products is part of a $182.6 million budget laid out by Mack in November. The budget has yet to be adopted due to arguments over its viability; if agreed, it will go into place on July 1, the start of the new fiscal year.

Save Money When You Buy China Wholesale Auto Parts}

Save Money When You Buy China Wholesale Auto Parts

by

Nydia

The world of car parts wholesaling is not limited to mechanics! Nowadays smart buyers everywhere are purchasing auto gear direct from wholesalers at rock bottom prices. You might not be a mechanic, however you can nonetheless cruise the Internet for these money-saving deals. While all wholesalers will provide pieces at more cheaply than full price, the best deals are often to be obtained on China wholesale auto parts.

Elementary car gear like floor coverings, car seat covers, and leather steering wheel covers are all offered at up to 75% less than retail when you shop on the web. You can also find automobile maintenance products like cleaners, chamois cloths, car wax, and cleaning brushes from wholesalers. If you live in a frigid region, there are ice scrapers to get rid of ice and snow removal items.

Discover auto parts you can buy and take over to your body shop for installation, saving yourself lots of money in the process. Have your windshield wipers gone bad? Buy new ones from Internet wholesalers. If you purchase a pack of 3, you’ll save even more. In time, you’ll need new ones. You can also find smaller accessories like vehicle fuses at cheap prices.

If it’s time for fresh tires, you can order those on the Internet as well. You may have no clue about to install them and align them, but a professional will. Many auto repairmen will cooperate with you if you want to obtain your own wholesale parts and then pay the expert for his expertise.

Maybe you’d like to have your vehicle painted to give it a fresh finish before selling it. You can buy vehicle paint on line and have it sent directly to your favorite body work shop and give your car a complete makeover with a discount to boot.

You can check with your auto repair person if he’s amenable to work with wholesale items you get yourself. While he might not advise it because he loses profit on the part’s markup that he would usually add on, he may still want to perform the job. When you have a easy-going relationship with your repairman, he might even give you tips about where to get the best prices.

China wholesale auto parts usually offer the best deals. Look on the web for Chinese wholesalers and see for yourself. Many Oriental wholesalers act as middlemen and have access to contacts throughout the world so you can order just what you want.

Nydia Roy has been in the wholesale business since 2000. He became one of the largest

Series of explosions hit hotels in Amman

Series of explosions hit hotels in Amman

Wednesday, November 9, 2005

At least three explosions hit US-owned hotels in Amman this evening, killing at least 57 people and wounding at least 245 others.

The first of the apparently coordinated suicide bombings occurred at 8.50 pm (1850 UTC) at the Grand Hyatt hotel in the Jordanian capital. It was followed by explosions at the Radisson SAS and the Days Inn. The hotels are particularly popular with American and Israeli tourists. At least one American was killed, and at least two others were wounded. They were not identified due to the condition on anonymity in the embassy.

The bomb at the Grand Hyatt hotel apparently went off in the lobby; the bomb at the Radisson SAS exploded in a wedding hall packed with around 300 people. Most of the casualties are believed to be Jordanian.

Jordanian King Abdullah II has condemned the bombings and announced that “justice will pursue the criminals”.

Islamic fundamentalist group Al-Qaeda, led by militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, is said to have claimed responsibility for the attacks on their website. The news was reported by several news outlets, but the authenticity of the claim has not yet been verified.

Danish clothing company sells T-shirts to support FARC and PFLP

Danish clothing company sells T-shirts to support FARC and PFLP

Friday, January 20, 2006

A recently created Danish clothing company is selling on the internet T-shirts in order to support the clandestine radio station of the Colombian guerrilla group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the graphical workshop of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In fact the money will be used by these groups to carry on their terrorist activities. FARC activities include kidnappings, masacres, bombs, extortions and the drug trade.

Fighters and Lovers is selling the T-shirts at 170 DKK (US$27.6), from which 35 DKK (US$5.7) are to be destinated to support both armed groups.

Anna Duever, Fighters and Lovers PR chief, said to Spanish news agency EFE that their objective is to “defend freedom and social justice, which is FARC and PFLP are fighting for”. Duever believes the fact the FARC has been included by the EU in its terrorist group list is a “political game”. “We pay our taxes in Denmark, and that money is used for financing the troops our government has sent to Iraq. That’s terrorism. Besides, in Colombia there’s a regime oppressing population and torturing and killing its people”, she said.

Colombian Foreign Affairs Minister, Carolina Barco, said to local media that “financing terrorist groups is unacceptable and goes against all the international norms. Yesterday [Tuesday 19] our ambassador contacted the Danish government, we sent a protest note and have demanded an explanation.”

A year ago, a Danish NGO named Oprør (“Rebelion”) stated it had donated money to the Colombian guerrilla. A new antiterrorism law in Denmark may punish it.

Skin Wart Removal About Skin Warts And How To Get Rid Of Them

Submitted by: Kelly Ash

A contagious virus, human papillomavirus, causes warts. The virus is found in most damp, moist areas where people congregate. While this virus is prevalent throughout the country, it is not usually dangerous. There are many skin wart removal methods to choose from, but before we select one, we need to identify the wart. .

The major types of warts are:

1) Common warts

As a rule, Common warts appear on our hands, and present no health problem. While often annoying and unattractive they usually respond to over-the-counter products or home remedies and are generally removed at home. If, however, they become infected you might want to have a physician take a look to be sure there is no problem.

2) Flat Warts (also known as verruca plana or juvenile warts)

Flat warts often occur on those parts of our body that we shave. They will most likely appear on our face as well as on legs and underarms. Flat warts are reddish-brown or flesh colored and have a slightly elevated flat surface.

Flat warts are actually benign tumors. As such, they are not threatening, but, if you have a flat wart on your face, you may want to see your dermatologist. The dermatologist will be best able to determine the most suitable skin wart removal technique for extracting it without leaving a scar.

3) Genital Warts

Genital warts grow in pubic areas and inside the vagina and anal canals. Genital warts are contagious, easily transmitted from sexual partner to sexual partner. These warts can be very dangerous, even cancerous. It is best to schedule an appointment with your doctor if you believe you have genital warts as soon as possible.

4) Plantar Warts

Plantar warts appear on the bottoms of our feet. They pose no threat; in fact, they will go away without treatment if given enough time. Typically, however, they are very irritating so we often have them removed by a skin care professional.

Dermatologists tend to remove them using Cryotherapy Therapy (freezing) or surgically if they are deep. The only major concern here is whether the treatment has completely removed all of the wart — if not, the wart will recur.

5) Subungual and Periungual Warts

These are small warts found under and around the fingernails and toenails. They are not dangerous but can be uncomfortable and unattractive. If you find they are troubling you, you may want to see your Dermatologist or use one of the many skin wart removal treatments available over-the-counter.

In Sum

Skin warts can be painful, itch and burn but usually cause no lasting problem. Genital warts are the exception to this.

Many skin wart removal methods exist. Treatments may not work, however, if you haven’t been able to cure the underlying virus that caused the wart in the first place. In this case, the wart will grow back.

HPV is easy to get and to pass on. Young people, athletes and sexual partners are the most susceptible. The virus is especially prevalent in swimming pools, showers and lockers.

FDA approves therapeutic use of insulin inhalant

FDA approves therapeutic use of insulin inhalant

Saturday, January 28, 2006

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of an inhalable form of insulin for treating both forms of diabetes in adults. The product, manufactured by Pfizer Inc. is called Exubera and is a inhaled powder form of recombinant short-acting human insulin (rDNA).

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that, when released into the blood, controls the upper limits of glucose presence in the bloodstream. Diabetics cannot produce (enough) insulin on their own, and have to control their blood sugars by appropriate diet, exercise and medication. Untreated Diabetes can have a serious adverse effect on health, it can lead to higher risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, retinal damage and diabetic shock, which can be fatal. Insulin has been used for the treatment of diabetes for many years now, but some patients find it difficult (and costly) to use as it has to be injected into the body, usually several times a day. Currently, about five million Americans take insulin injections. Also, the use of any form of insulin can cause blood sugar to drop below safe levels, a condition called hypoglycemia. As a result, the use of insulin must be accompanied by a careful and regular monitoring of blood sugar levels.

The FDA has issued guidelines that the inhalable form should not be used by smokers, patients with asthma, bronchitis, or emphysema as tests have shown that its use can reduce the breathing capacity of the lungs. Other side effects associated with Exubera therapy seen in clinical trials included cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, and dry mouth. The FDA has given its approval on the basis of safety studies of short-term use and studies of its effects over long-term use are underway.

Pfizer has said the product wouldn’t be widely available until June or July and that exact prices haven’t been set. A Pfizer spokesperson has said that the price will be “competitive” to injected insulin.
